I would first pull the valve cover and see if you still have valve seals, as this is the easiest thing to do first. These old umbrella seals harden up and crack. Then do a compression check like previous replies suggest. How's the oil smell?

what do you mean how does the oil smell? the residue in the valve and valve covers area? I should have you guys know that the engine burns up very little if any oil (probably because i dont drive it much) and last time i remember working on setting the idle while the engine was running i dont remember smelling exhaust in the engine bay. about oil smell while the engine is running i dont smell anything but exhaust gas. from now on i will provide every teeny weeny bit of detail ;D most likely those headers do not have those MHCV valves because it would be common sense in a high performance application to lessen restriction to exhaust flow right?

When I asked How the oil smells, I meant , if you pull the dipstick out and sniff it, if it smells like gas. If you had a bad/stuck ring, engine could smoke only on that side that has the bad ring, and also excessive blowby from ignition would make the oil smell like gas.

Most everyone here knew exactly what you meant Ray, including me. The moment I read "how does the oil smell," I had a mental image of pulling out a dipstick, whiffing the dipstick, rubbing the oil between my fingers, smelling the oil on my fingers... Those are the kinds of things that I learned from lots of age, experience and hands on working with cars...now we have these kinds of online forums available to learn this stuff...something I wish we had available 30 or 35 years ago! Smell the oil, taste the tranny fluid, rub the grease... "THAT'S what I'm talking about!"

Thanks Jer. I try to keep the replies short so I don't confuse anyone with too much information, I could ramble on and on. I read any book I can get my hands on about engines. On the other hand I don't want to be too vague either. I was thinking mabey I was too vague on the oil smelling, but I see you guys understood. I'm glad this site isn't like the other one. Was watching guys insulting each other's mothers, of all things today. got disgusted and came back here.

sorry jer i didnt mean to insult anyone on this site. sometimes i have a bad way with how i word things. If you were looking at me when i said it you would know i didnt mean it like that. i apologize. i would have to say my biggest flaw is i ask the stupidest questions ever even when i have time to think. when i get back home i will smell the dipstick and give you guys the update... and from now on i will know what "smelling the oil" means

Keep the questions coming new71. We are here to help. I do have a question for you. Does your car exhibit any driveability/performance issues? My line of thought is that if you had a mechanical engine condition that allowed very low exhaust flow from the passenger bank, certainly that mechanical condition would also cause a noticable engine performance issue. Smoke, poor power, backfire thru exhaust, running rough/skipping....etc etc being some typical engine performance issues. Since you never mentioned any performance issues, I am working on the assumption that your engine is actually running smoothly and well. If thats the case, I think you might simply have an exhaust leak (or perhaps even a restriction) on the passenger side of the car. It would be a good idea to check in to that , prior to taking off valve covers, taking compression readings etc etc. I`ll try to be patient and not bang my head too much. Jer gets too excited when I do that.

Well tom remember when i had that problem with the engine bogging when i get on the gas? well about a month ago i changed the timing and the car ran much better i mean MUCH better but it still bogs when i try to get on the gas(not as bad as before) and that engine has NO power. i feel like i could get out and push it faster than that!

Grasshopper, how did you set the timing? Did you use a timing light? Lack of power (bog) is very indicative of incorrect timing, so we want to make sure that is done right. Granted, some people can do it by ear but I am not of them. #Thinking# ...does your 71 have points too? or has it been converted to electronic ignition?
