I had a post about torque boxes, not sure where it went??? I said I would check my cars, checked them today, the 71 RT has them, my 72 Rallye 440 has them, my 72 Rallye 318 does not have them.

[Anybody know what a torque box is?] Jer, if you are really curious about unibody construction, sub frame connectors and torque boxes, you can read the newsletter I authored for our Cordoba Club at www.cordobaclubusa.com. On the home page, click on the Club Newsletter page, and download the .pdf file attached there. What's up there right now was our first edition, and I attempted to explain, as best I could, some of the concepts of unibody construction/repair/modification. In short, torque boxes are plates of steel that connect the rocker panel to the front or rear subframes. Here's a picture of an original Charger piece that was just on ebay. This is a rear. The pocket/opening is for access to the rear leaf spring front hanger bolts. Here's how I think of them. On cars without them, body stresses/flex are passed from the rockers to the subframes through the floor, and some cross car members. So you end up with a U shaped channel, with the rocker making up one side of the U, the floor the bottom of the U, and the subframe rail the other side of the U. By adding the torque boxes across the open end of that U, you make a "box", which is stronger.

Thanks, Dave.. I'm glad you didn't think I was being sarcastic, or a Smart-Aleck.. I really did not know what they were, which made it really difficult to go out and see if I had any on my 440 SE... Now I know, I am no longer ignorant (on the subject of torque boxes anyway ), and I will be heading to your website for further knowledge enrichment!! Aftermarket torque boxes are for the 2nd gen B body cars so far. Maybe these will become available soon. Please correct me if I'm wrong!
Thanks for the pic! I had ne idea that the design of them had changed so dramatically.
