I picked up a vacuum gauge today. When cold, the idle set screw has to be opened about 2.5 turns and the choke 95% closed. It runs good like this except the fast idle. The manifold vacuum is at 19.5" in park and 16.5" in gear. It seems to be drawing too much air through the carburetor. Once it warms up, manifold vacuum is at 20.0" in park and 16.5" in gear. If I try to idle it down, the vacuum drops to 14.0" to 17.0" and it dies. I can idle the thing back up and it runs fine again, only idled up. If I drive like this, it runs strong, but as soon as I let off, it tries to die. I tried to manually hold the choke wide open and run it. It will start but not idle. Plus when I accelerate, it crackles and backfires. (Maybe timing?) Also, the idle mixture screws don't do anything from completely closed to wide open or anywhere in between under any of the above scenarios. Maybe this carburetor is junk? It's a Holley 4160, List#8006

I guess I'm not very imaginative (or experiences with Holley cabs). But I just have the vacuum leak idea stuck in my head! Since you mentioned on the 16th, that the only hoses attached to th carb. are vac. advance and PCV. What about the brake booster vac. hose? Have you tried removing the hose at the manifold (it attaches to the manifold, right?) and capping the manifold, just to see how it runs? Also, you mentioned the carb. was full of junk when you rebuilt it, and the mixture screws don't seem effective. Did you blow out all the passages (with air or carb. cleaner), or chase them with a wire? Just curious....

Have not tried capping the booster port. I did remove the carb and take it apart again to double check the passages. I have boiled it in B-12 carb soak, sprayed the passages with carb cleaner, used a torch tip cleaner for a chaser and blew everything out with compressed air. I think I covered all the bases, but it is still doing the same thing. I am at the point of bolting on a T-Quad to see the difference.

Sounds like you've got the passages covered. Those are all the things I'd have done (and that they taught me in school) for cleaning and checking them. We used to have an instructor who smoked, and used his exhaled cig. smoke through a straw to identify the different circuits, and check that they were open. But that was another time!

mrhws, can you send a picture of the other side of the T-Quad? I took mine down last night and got it cleaned up. I want to try and install tomorrow night, and I need to see the choke assembly. Man, your pic of the accelerator side is really good. Thanks.

That's perfect. I will hopefully get this thing swapped over tonight and see how it runs. Thanks so much.

Cleaning the T-Quad didn't work. I ordered a kit and it will get here tomorrow. Will I run into any trouble bolting it onto the Edlebrock Torker single plane intake? As far as, will the two work together, or will I have to get a Mopar cast iron intake?

The torker I have on mine is set up for a square bore carb, you will probably need an adapter to go from square bore to spread bore.

Rebuilt the T-Quad. She's running really good and idles like it should. Still likes a little fine tuning, but is back where it should be. I talked to a Holley man today, (builds race engines) and he told me I am probably getting vacuum through the secondaries. He told me it's a common problem if your not experienced with Holleys. I told him that I'll just bring it to him and let him do it right. It's what I should have done up front. As i stated earlier, I'm not much on aftermarket stuff. Anyway, it's good to have it back on the road. Thanks for everyone's help. I hope you all have a safe and wonderful 4th. Remember to thank the Lord for this great country.
