As posted here I bought the remote trunk latch that was on eBay recently. It arrived today, so I've been playing with it to see how it works. I'm hoping you guys can help figure out how I'm going to install the thing ... A picture speaks a thousand words, so here goes: Front Front Back LHS RHS - closed RHS - opening RHS - open Click 'em for high res. Front Is Front, as John Muir would say - ie "front" faces the front of the car etc etc.

From what I've figured out so far, the latch is operated by pulling / pushing the sprung lever away from the body of the latch, ie up and / or towards the front of the car. The question is, where does the rod go and how is it operated? I have two theories / solutions. (1) the rod runs along the underside of the trunk lid and must be pulled forwards to operate the latch. Perhaps I'd make some sort of conduit or at least a couple of bits of wire to hold it up. I can then run a cable from the rod either to a manual release somewhere near the back seat, or to a solenoid perhaps mounted on the trunk lid itself. Or, for safety's sake, maybe both. (2) the rod hangs down, and is pushed upwards to operate the latch. I'm a bit stumped as to where it would hang though - perhaps it's accessed through the license plate opening. But I'm not with my car at the moment so I can't offer it up to see if this is workable. Let me know what y'all think - I need to decide in the next 48 hrs or so whether to shave the trunk lock and commit to making this thing work ...

Does it perhaps use some kind of vacuum or electric actuator?
Looks like a neat piece.
Good luck, JON

I think that this is a hood latch for some car. That would explain why it doesn't have the slot for the bar that the key turns. And it would also explain why it does have the pull bar to open it. The outside does look just like my trunk lock though. I came across an article of a person that has the same latch. I matched up the picture of the back of the latch from the article and the picture you posted and they are exactly the same. www.classicmoparforum.com/e-body-hood-latch/

Hmm, could be a hood latch I guess. Which would be disappointing, but it could maybe still be made to work.
The numbers on mine are 'SE1 161' - not sure if this means anything to anyone?
[edit: I fear it is a hood latch - A-body perhaps.]

Not that it helps in anyway but it seems it was a 69-70 only option. Code: P45. Hope you figure it all out, guess you're going to need some kind of knob in the cabin as well. Watching this thread with interest...

Just back from a trip West to see the car. It looks like this latch will fit - it's dimensionally identical to the existing one. So option (1) above should work. Alas progress is unlikely to be all that rapid. I have two weeks' holiday coming up, and after that I've decided to focus on cleaning up the underneath of the car and maybe doing the radiator, a/c compressor and a couple of other bits before we do the paint. So I guess I'll get back to my latch conundrum sometime next month ... Thanks for all the replies

...It looks like this latch will fit - it's dimensionally identical to the existing one... I'm fairly certain that what you have is a hood latch, with the rod that would extend to a "satellite" relay/swiveling mechanism. Also, the absence of the center rectangular hole is a clue. My factory 66 Charger had a cable operated (inside remote handle) hood release. The cable ran to the "satellite relay" I mentioned, then a rod (similar to the one you have) went to the actual hood latch. My latch had a tendency to release the hood while driving, so until I could install the replacement (bought from Topher, thank you), I installed a TRUNK LATCH from a 3rd gen Charger. The measurements and mounting holes are "dimensionally" the same, and it allowed me to run a very long screwdriver through the grill and open the hood. The electric/remote trunk latch I bought from Tom to "upgrade" one of my 3rd Gens actually has the motor/solenoid IN THE LATCH ITSELF...so that's not what you have here, I'm pretty sure. Hope this helps, Take Care, Jer. #WaveHi#
