Anyone happen to know what shade of silver was originally used on a 72 Rallye grill? Compared to the rallye in the original brochure mine looks light and faded. Thanks

Hey, missed you at the fall bash. My guess would be satin black and the rest light argent. I would use Duplicolor trim black for that part. Sticks to anything.

I read somewhere it's Light Argent Silver, there are no black bits, they're just shadows. I took mine out and studied the paint from front to back and could see no difference so I assumed they hadn't faded and put them back in. I tried to upload a picture for you but got some message about a ProBoards internal error so I gave up. Sorry about that. As far as I know mine are completely original, unpainted and unmolested. Hope this helps

Thanks for the replys! Sorry we didn't make it to the fall bash. We would have been there but already had tickets & reservations for the race at Dover.

I don't have a definitive answer to the question.... but if the factory literature picture was to be believed, it sure does not look like light argent to me.
I always have thought that the grilles on Rallye cars were supposed to be darker than standard grille equipped non Rallye cars. Of course, looking at "restored" cars may be misleading as they may have been incorrectly done. The darker color would make sense given the blackout on hood, black tail light bezels, and black in door recesses.
And all of the 72 grilles that I have had, most certainly did have some recessed areas done in black.

I was thinking the same thing, it makes perfect sense to have a darker finish. Interestingly enough though it appears to be the factory finish so I'm going to leave it alone. The recessed portion does appear to be badly faded black that over the years has turned to gray. There is also no fleck in these areas which leads me to believe black is correct as it doesn't match the rest of the grill.

Use some "Back To Black". I believe it is by Mothers. Works great.

Ok, after reading the updates I have come to the conclusion the grill is moulded in black plastic. The recessed areas were left in the white (or black in this case). Kudo's to gadabra for sticking to his guns, I thought it was paint. And Bob, thanks for the tip! I just happen to have some back to black and you can see the difference with five minutes worth of work. I think it's time to remove the grill's and give them a good detailing. She could use a little TLC, I've been preoccupied with my 71 SE project for the last year.
