Heck...why not an off-season thread? It's that time of year when good teams have to release good players...to afford their "marquee QB" personally...I would like the NFL to adopt a policy, like done in hockey, limiting a contract to a certain % of a teams cap. Seems bad for the game for teams with franchise QB's to spend 20% of their cap on one player. Lions free up 11 million + in cap space by releasing Burleson and Delmas. espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/I'd/10451445/nate-burleson-released-detroit-lions Saints release 4 defensive players to free up cap space espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/I'd/10443120/new-orleans-saints-cut-jabari-greer-smith-roman-harper

As a fan, without regard to the cap, I'm very sorry to see both of these players go (assuming we can't re-sign Delmas).
I've admired Nate's work since he was a Viking, and was very happy to have a player of his caliber as a receiver. We already were in need (again) of a quality #2 receiver for the other side of the field from Calvin. Now we need a good guy down the middle, too. Along with our need for corners (and now a safety), that's a lot for one draft/free agency season. Let's hope they can get it right.
There's talk they'd like to re-sign Delmas, if he doesn't get a better offer somewhere else. He's a heck of an athlete.

I think it will really depend on what his financial expectations are. The Steelers are not usually big players in Free Agency. They typically make a few smaller moves after the over priced players get signed by the dumb teams. (Redskins)
Ryan Clark is a Free Agent for the Steelers and due to age and poor play in 2013, won't likely be resigned. Troy Polamalu has a huge cap number for 2014....and probably will have to take a significant reduction or be cut. How much of a cut will he be willing to take? 50% ?? They do have a high draft pick from last year (Shamarko Thomas) that is probably ready to man one of the safety positions.
Delmas seems to be a pretty decent talent.... BUT, everything I have read on Steelers sites is that his knee condition is degenerative. That he typically only practiced one day a week this past season. That's not really an encouraging sign. Sounds like the Lions were lucky to nurse him thru the season, given the condition of his knees.

Delmas is a great athlete, and a great influence in the locker room and huddle. But yes, his knees are questionable. Of his 5 years here, he played the first two, was hurt most of the next two, and played last season, but without much practice time. IF he stays healthy, he's a good pickup for anyone, or a good re-signing for us. But that's a big if.

The website that I get most of my Steeler news from..... Steelers Depot said not to read much into him visiting the Steelers first. That it is probably one stop of many. Since he was cut/released, he does not have to wait until the "Free Agency" period. So, he is simply getting a jump on the market.
I am curious to see how this pans out. I think the Steelers definitely need to sign a vet or two for their secondary.
Like I said before, I am 99% sure Ryan Clark is a goner. Troy Polamalu and Ike Taylor both have large cap hits and are getting up in age... Both are expected to be asked to take significant pay cuts. That didn't work out very well with James Harrison last year. In fact, he ended up accepting less from the Bengals than what the Steelers were proposing. Realistically, those 2 guys $$ needs to be cut in the ballpark of 50%....which may be something they are not willing to do. It is a "possibility" that the Steelers could end up having to replace 3/4 of their secondary. That's generally not a good thing. I don't want to see a bunch of rookies and 2nd year players back there. So, if healthy, Delmas could be a nice addition. With that said, I don't think the Lions would have let him go if they thought his knees would hold up. Personally, I'd try to keep Ike one more year and let Troy go if need be. Safety is usually one of the lower paid positions in the league...and the Steelers cap hit for their 2 starting safeties was around 16 million last year. I just don't think that is good allocation of resources to spend about 15% of your cap on two safeties.

I'm sure Delmas' knees where part of the calculation, but his was a cap casualty, just like your guys risk being. MLIVE

The best article I have read in regard to the Richie Incognito/Jonathan Martin fiasco in Miami. espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/I'd/10458607/lose-crucial-parts-code-nfl-locker-rooms What I found amusing is that the NFL had a lawyer do the investigation. Duh....what the heck did you think he would "find" As a fan, I kind of assume that a locker room is a crude place. I would not expect it to be a sterile/PC correct environment. What if Charles Barkley was tasked to do the investigation? I'd bet he report that there was "nothing outside the normal"

Yeah, that whole deal is a shame. He wanted to stay, but that knee, and cap hit...just a bad combo for us.
