I asked about this about a year ago. I was able to find two different manifold castings that did not have provisions for the heat riser both with casting dates for early 1974. Not sure why but in 1974 the HP manifolds did not get the heat riser in some applications . Why? I have no idea. wichargerguy.proboards.com/thread/17524/74-400-440-exhaust-manifold

Possibly to avoid overheating or vapor lock . At least that's what some folks with this system in place seem to believe. There's a gasket modification that blocks off the intake port.

Ha, isn't it a coincidence. I had my new mufflers installed (Dynomax Super Turbos) and now I can actually hear. I knew I always had a bit of an exhaust leak but now I can REALLY hear it. My exhaust guy said it was the heat riser. Manifold has to come off (I'm told) and he suggests just welding it shut. Good gawd it is always something. Now this is really bothering me.

OddZ, I'd be interested to know exactly what your muffler guy does to the manifold if you go ahead and remove it. Also, will you be blocking off the port that goes through the intake manifold with a new exhaust manifold gasket modification? I keep debating on if I should go with headers and all the potential obstructions and clearance issues they may bring. Headers will take care of the heat rider leak.
