Now that my engine's rebuilt, in the car, and it's running great, I'm tackling the next items on my to do list. I've found that the car runs great at most speeds except at around 70-80 mph there's a vibration from the rear end. I had recently removed the axles and repacked the bearings and all seems good. Except I found that the slight "play" where you can move the passenger side wheel is more than it should be. It's more like a 1/4" rather than the 3/16" tolerance. I've adjusted it all the way and it still has that play in it. Not sure if this has anything to do with the vibration I'm getting, but it's something I found. Also, could the vibration be caused by a drive shaft that's out of balance ? Or any other ideas ?

I've had a couple friend have this issue. Did you (by any chance) replace any of the mounts with solid ones instead of the old style rubber? Particularly the tranny mount?

Bushing in the tailshaft of tranny will give a vibe like you speak of. Probably not in rear axle unless you have a bent axle. Did you have to beat the crap out of them to get them out? Wheel balance? Loose ubolt? Seen all these things cause havoc over the years.

Transmission mounts are all new, rubber, installed new Spicer U joints. Wheels were balanced and front end alignment recently. Rear axle came out smoothly but there is that play in it.

O.K. May be worth putting the car on jackstands and run it and see if you can feel the vibration or see it. Be careful doing this and don't slam it in park to stop it. Just turn the key off in gear. Be safe about it. You could also have somebody drive while you sit in the back seat and have them weave from side to side "loading" the bearing on each side and listen to see if you hear an issue. Again being careful while doing it. My boss recently chased a similar problem in his 'Cuda and found the mainshaft was twisted in his 4 speed. Believe it or not it only showed up at a constant speed around 65. In case you didn't know, I have the third brother to yours and Bob's cars. 74 SE, same green but mine has a green top and jade interior. Sunroof , PW, cruise, 360/727,buckets with a buddy seat, AM/FM, defrost, tuff wheel.

>:(vibration from the rear of the car could be rear wheels and tires,(rotate the rears to the front if possible and see if vibration goes to the front) or it could be u joints (check for excessive looseness or tightness) driveshaft out of balance (check for missing weights on shaft) could be a bent rear axle. that's all I can think of , hope it helps. start with the easy and cheap o do stuff first, let me know what you find !!

Is there play in the pinion? If the bearings go bad on the pinion it will have slop and a leak from the front seal.
