I have a 1972 400 hp engine, runs strong and has a large aftermarket camshaft, and has lifter noise but great oil pressure. I put a cam in a 73 400 charger years ago and it seemed like the base lobe on the aftermarket camshaft was smaller in diameter and required slightly longer pushrods, has anyone ran into this?

I don't get the poll with the way diff question (Laughing Out Loud). But, I have wondered about that too because I got some problems with my Crower cam and the 916 lifters getting out of oil ( maybe because the oil groove was leaving the tappet bore ? )... so, paying attention

Why don't call the manufacturer of the cam to see what length they what used with the lifters
Another option is to measure the length they make push rod length measure sticks
They are called adjustable push rod length checkers only 12 bucks at Summit

Good idea, but I dont know what cam it is (it was this way when I bought the car) the pushrod length checker sounds like the answer, thanks much!

Sounds like you have the noisy lifter problem a lot of people have had. Just do a search for lifter noise on any site and you will have a long read. People have been finding current lifters from cam companies are junk and are having to swap for good ones. The cam you put in years ago was probably a regrind which takes a stock cam profile and regrinds it to a different profile which leaves it a smaller base circle usually requiring longer pushrods. The problem you are having now is probably bleed off or poor quality lifters. They could also be Rhoades lifters that someone put in to tame a cam down to make it more streetable. They "tick", the other problem is more of a "rattle". Which noise do you have and under what kind of a load? Hot or cold?
