Can a 318 be rebuilt without pulling the motor out of the car? If I have to pull the motor out, does the hood need to come off?

Not really and yes if you don't want to drop the K member and trans with it.

So, I cannot drop the oil pan and remove the crankshaft and Pistons without removing the motor?

So, I cannot drop the oil pan and remove the crankshaft and Pistons without removing the motor? You wouldn't really want to even if you could. Even though there's "more work" too pull the engine it's a whole heck of a lot easier to do that kind of major work even if you could pull the crank, etc from below. And if your like me your back will appreciate it also. This last year I was faced with having to replace my cam and I was going to pull the heads for a grind also. With that kind of work I figured it'll be a lot easier to just pull the engine and I was right especially since it ended up needed to have a complete rebuild done.

EVEN STILL IF WAS POSIBLE...
if you will rebuild CORRECTLY I think you need to take the block to be bored anyway allong with new camshaft bearings and freeze plugs installed.... don't you think ?

diff stuff is if you are thinking just on a rering job, and still on that way, hard to reach the front rods and then torque correctly to reassembly.
