Got pulled over on I-95 on the North side of Richmond, VA this past weekend. My "crime" ?? Driving 58 mph in a 70 zone. During the day, I usually drive right at the speed limit. At night, I tend to slow down a little as lights tend to bother my eyes. I normally drive in the slow lane but at the time was in the middle of 3 lanes. I had moved into that lane to accommodate merging traffic. Trooper told me that people driving that slowly usually are drunk/impaired. I think we both ended up feeling a little silly.... He did give me a "modified" test, which consisted of following his pen with my eyes, without turning my head.

I've always thought you looked a little suspicious. You have a rcpt. for all those parts, right?

Aah....an overloaded pickup with a camper shell, occupied by 3 shady looking characters doing 12 miles under the limit in the middle lane of an Interstate.....a Police Officer's dream come true !!! That being Virginia (or for that matter almost any state these days) I'm surprised they didn't "request/ask" you for your consent to search your truck, i.e. "you don't mind if we look, do you?", and you end up with all of your parts spread out along the side of the Interstate and the roof/hood of the truck....that's usually the case these days (with YOU being responsible to pick it all back up and repack it back into the cargo bay, of course). I guess you just didn't look enough like a drug mule OR a drunk, Tom.... Attachment DeletedYou're going to have to work on your image, buddy.... Maybe replace that parts hauler too, eh? Attachment Deleted(I don't know WHY they think you're hauler looks suspicious.)

I had only been to 2 yards at the time, so I did not have a significant load. Maybe one tote full of parts. I have heard about those "consensual searches" before. Not sure if I would consent to that or not. While I don't have anything to hide.....I also don't care to be part of a no cause "fishing expedition" I do realize that not consenting will probably mean that a Canine unit would show up out of the blue for "back-up" ....and that I would be unnecessarily delayed. I was pulled over outside Memphis a few years ago by a cop on a fishing expedition. My truck was loaded down heavy and the camper shell had no side windows. His excuse was that I "came close to the white line" on the shoulder. Never said I crossed it...just "came close" He asked a lot of questions....and did look in the rear of the truck, with my permission.

Doing a consensual search... tossing peoples stuff on the side of the road and leaving them a mess to clean up is a "Richard Head" tactic in my opinion.
On Sunday, I bought a pair of sunglasses. That helped a lot. Less stress on my eyes. I wore them during the day. When it got dark, my eyes were less stressed/tired and I was able to keep my speed up better.

No search but I had a strange episode while vacationing out west this summer. Passing through South Dakota we decided to stop at Wounded Knee located on the Oglala indian reservation. After walking around a few minutes we got back in our car and started on when we were stopped by the reservation police. He asked me to get in his vehicle and sit in the "Hot Seat". A couple minutes passed as he was calling in my paperwork. I asked what was the issue? He said I was seven mph over. After some polite conversation he was convinced I didn't have anything illegal and was just a tourist. He told me the ticket would be thirty bucks but as I was about to reach for my wallet he gave me a warning and sent me on my way.
I know people that are cops so spending time in a police vehicle didn't bother me much. On the other hand my daughter waiting in our car didn't take it as well.

Speaking as a former Police Officer, I detest "fishing expeditions"...skirting the edge of reasonable suspicion and probable cause (and many times crossing over that edge) are what give cops a bad name/reputation. After a family on vacation (or a hard working average Joe with a truck load of salvage-purchased auto parts for that matter) gets everything he has in his vehicle drug out and spread out on the side of the road, just how positive do you think his attitude is going to be towards ALL cops from then on ??
If one has been a highway trooper/sheriff deputy/city policeman for any length of time at all, and one can't tell a drug mule or illegal immigrant smuggler (coyote) from one of the "good guys", that trooper needs to get himself another line of work...gives "good" cops a bad name.
On a side note, glad to hear about the sunglasses, Tom....I've thought for years that you ought to wear them....next thing--speaking as someone who just lost their stepfather to melanoma skin cancer--you need to start thinking about wearing one of them Steelers hats while you're out there in the sun....and an overcast day is worse for your skin than a bright sunny day.
