I noticed the crank balancer wobbling when I was trying to adjust timing. I have had some problems with backfires and I'm worried that I might have a bent crank shaft. The engine does vibrate some but I'm not sure how much of that is normal for a 440. The bolt is tight on pulley so that's not it. Anyone have words of wisdom on this. Thx

A wobbly harmonic balancer could be an indication of the rubber separating from the metal. It can be very dangerous if that is the problem. As far as a back fire that could be a number of things from a tune up, carburetor, valves or even vacuum. What have you checked so far? is it a modified engine? Type carburetor? Ive never heard of a bent crank unless there was a catastrophic failure and the engine just lets loose and blows.

It's a stock engine with a 750 cfm edelbrock carb. I've replaced all electronics, plugs and wires and vacuum is good. I need to get someone to put a timing light on it and see what does. I have tried to adjust it by driving and readjusting but no matter where it is set it still spits an backfires a little. I have had it running fine at times but it always seems to go back to spitin an sputtering and its agervating. From what I know about the engine it should have 10k miles or less on it, it was rebuilt back in 2012 but I didn't own it then.

If it runs fine sometimes then I guess you could rule out a bad valve or lifter. Do you have a spare carburator to try out?

No I don't have another carb and not sure which one to get if it comes to that. I have a neighbor that has a thermo quad but does not want to part with it.

Wobbly balancer= somebody probably beat the crap out of it replacing the timing chain or balancer seperation. Probably not a bent crank unless it was in a accident long ago. Backfire sure sounds like ignition. Did you replace distributor ? Guy at work had a pickup coil that threw fits till it went out. Run the firing order on the plug wires. Did the vacuum gauge needle bounce back and forth or was it a steady reading? Erratic needle could be a bad valve. Just some ideas.

Well I haven't done a vac test yet but I need to get it done ASAP. I'm very frustrated with this engine, I wish I had the money to start from scratch and then I would know what I have. I don't know the guy who built this engine but I'm not feeling reel good about it right now. I have checked firing order an it's right and wires, plugs, distributer cap an bug are new. It's backfiring out the tail pipe and carb. I've got a guy who knows these cars but he lives 45 min away and it's hard to get him here but if I can get him back with a vac gauge and timing light we might figure this out. I don't mind working on it but it would be nice to drive it some too.

Hmmmm...don't know that's I've ever seen / noticed one shaped like that.
Is there some particular reason it has to have that beveled edge?
I just finished reading an article in Mopar Action where they are adding EFI to their project Bold Beeper (big block Road Runner). He needed a thinner balancer than the one that what they had last rebuilt the engine with, and just ordered one from Summit.

Looks like one off a RV motor. Definitely cast crank. Paint line makes me wonder if it was on far enough. Make sure you borrow or buy a balancer installer to put it back on with. A BFH will just have you back where you started. A last resort would be to contact a number of places in Hemmings Motor News that rebuild balancers. Usually a quik turnaround, but ask if it will be checked out as being true before they repair it.
