Hey everyone! Im new to this forum and the main reason for that is I have owned a 72 SE for a long time. For 16 years i have been passionately struggling to make it what I want. I've had multiple issues over the years and I just need some guidance over the speed bumps at this point. So I will get right to it. When i bought the car it had a 360 put in it. It had its issues, so at that point Decided to go big or go home. With that said I found a 440 and all the stuff to go with it. I installed the 440 for the most part without issue, and reluctantly decided to put headers in at that time. With that being said, I quickly learned that the headers made doing even the simplest of jobs very difficult. Last summer I made the decision to remove the headers and all was right until I attempted to 1) located the correct drivers side Exhaust Manifold, and 2) after installation, finding that my steering knuckle/box hits the manifold by the flange when steering. Since finding all this out I have tried to grind the manifold, adjust the steering column, find a year-correct manifold, etc... So my question is this or I should say these: Do I have the wrong driver's side manifold? Do I have the wrong steering column? Would it be the K frame that is wrong or was there only one type for small and big blocks? It doesnt seem like there is a whole lot of different exhaust manifolds out there. From what I could find there is a more "wild" looking M shaped one and a very normal type, and also the truck type. If someone could point me in a direction here I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks to all for reading!

Well, a couple of questions first. What year is the 440? And what are the numbers on the manifolds. If you go to TTI or Accurate Exhaust, they have the casting numbers listed for what are the correct manifolds if you want factory correct.

The motor is a 73 440. Heads and all. The casting numbers on the manifolds check out as a 69 or 70 gtx and r/t listing. The manifolds I have seem to be fairly common as I have 2 pair of them now. They are the exact match to my fathers 69 r/t. This is what confuses me. The headers I had on there had no clearance problems. I've done a lot of looking for manifolds and now I'm wondering if I'm missing something else like proper column or were the k members different?

The wild looking "M" shaped manifold sounds like the high flow manifolds used on the HP engines. I'm guessing you'll need to find out what the part number is for the manifolds on a '72 & '73. '71 & '72 are for the most part the same animal. My '71 383HP engine uses #2899879 for the passenger side. For some reason I didn't write down the number for the drivers side.

I have a 440 too and it does get tight in there, working on that engine tends to bring out my dark side but anyway I had some pics of mine and maybe they will help.

I can't speak for 440 but I have a 400HP. I "think" they are the same but I am not 100%. My casting numbers are 3751071 (R) - 3751068 (L).

Those pics really help out BIG time! Those manifolds look to dump out is lot different than what I have. I think I will be looking around the nearest salvage yard again, but at least I have pics to go by now. Thank you guys very much! I hope to return the favor someday.

I could be wrong, but if I recall correctly....there are 70/71 manifolds, 72 manifolds, and 73-74 manifolds.
I'd break out my useless parts numbers book...but I believe it lists them by "part number" not by the casting number stamped on them.

Well, he said the motor is a 73 and my manifolds are 73 (re: date code on side 3/73). Question is Tom, is 400HP same as 440 in 73? My collision manual says 400 4bbl and 440 all except 74 are the same.
