What all rear ends will fit in a 1974 Charger. Or rather than change rear should I put a new set of gears in the 9 and 1/4. IT has real High gears and is open. I have a 8 and 3/4 out of a cordoba. Will it fit?

8.75" production ended in '74, except for trucks, if I recall correctly. If you have one that came out of a Cordoba (introduced in '75), then it came from somewhere else originally. I know...I have an 8.75" '71 B-body axle sitting under my Cordoba, waiting to be installed. Cordobas came std. with 8.25" axles, even behind 400s. You only received the 9.25" with a towing package, or other "package" (like GT for Magnums, or 300 for the '79 Cordoba...again, if I recall correctly). Now that you know more about Cordoba axles than you wanted to...if you have a 9.25 already, I'd be tempted to spend the money on new gears for it. It's quite strong, and a known commodity (if you've owned it a while, and are having no trouble with it). That's just me...if it ain't broke, don't fix it. If you had a smaller 8.25" axle, and big plans in the horsepower dept., then I'd say a change was in order. But that 9.25" will take most anything you can throw at it (within reason). For what it's worth, here's an old chart I kept a copy of, from a website that appears to be gone. Hat-tip to who ever created, but I cannot vouch for it's accuracy.

I know the 8.25, 8.75 and 9.25 all fit. I have three Rallyes and each one has a different size. If you are pulling the rear from another car you might have to make some adjustments for it to fit

Add me to the keep the 9 1/4 crowd. Add Suregrip, 3:55 , new bearings from Rock Auto (be sure to use 5% discount code) and drive. No significance strength diff for street driving. Same work will probably have to be done to any rear you change to anyway.

Ok thankyou after i posted that the rearend is under a 72 sat. and the guy i got the car from told me it came out of a cordoba. He said it was the wrong rear for that carand he was trting to get me to take the rear out and get it backto Detroit. I live north of Pittsburgh and I told him if he wanted it he could bring the rear down and change it. Witch was most likley a 7/4 318 rear because that is what it had new. I had him deliver the car and I just think he forgot to change it back because it has all big block suspension. He was building a cordoba and he tryed to tell me it did not fit the perches right. Never heard fom him again. Thanks again I love this site like I said before I had a head injury because I ran you guys out of breath reading my one post I hope you all got thru the loss of breath. Thanks again I am going to post all my mopar stuff. I am in the prosess of getting a Rally Charger so this going to be my last project I already have a 1967 GTX that is finished and for health reasons I am going to do the Rally and down size. That will give me more time to injoy the cars. So if anybody is intersted in a package deal of 2 cars and a ton of parts keep watching I am trying to double check everything I have plus I will be bringing back more extra parts with other car. Also once I get my truck and trailer in order if anyone needs a car pickedup I will give you a good deal.I just checked on bringing a car back from florida all I can say is WOW and I drove truck for 30 years and deisel is cheaper but not the price of hauling a car plus i am not afraid to haul parts or motors ect in the back of my truck plus my trailer has a 10 ton winch so I can load anything.
