Hi, to compensate for terrible steering, I thought I would change the P/S box, rag joint and coupler. Unfortunately, I have not been able to separate any of the column from the steering box. Is there a knack or something I'm missing? (Split pin in rag joint doesn't clear bolts and bolts do not undo as spinning in housing. Coupling seal has fallen apart but I don't know how to remove steering column spline from it). PLEASE HELP!

You need to drive out the roll pin at steering box. Click on picture to expand. I used a red arrow to point out the roll pin.

You cannot see clearly in this picture but the roll pin will not pass by the thread of the bolts on the rag joint. I have tried this and also tried to remove the bolts but they will not undo as they spin in the carrier. ??

Take out the roll pin I pointed out....separate from steering box with a little prying. pull the whole column with the rag joint out of the car. Do the rest of the rag joint/coupler work on a work bench. Much easier than working under the hood.

Thanks Tom, steering column is out of the car. Rubber puck is 70% missing due to wear. Coupler is ok but retaining spring clip is in 3 pieces. Just got to remove p/s box before I can order all new replacements.

What are you going to do for a replacement steering gearbox? I would highly recommend a "Firm Feel" stage 3 unit.

Unfortunately I'm in UK and parts are limited to a few custom shops. Buying direct from USA can cost too much P&P. I think my local shop bulk buys from Classic Industries to save shipping costs but choice is limited.

I put a Lares unit in my '71 I ordered from Advanced Autos' website. Another option.

Not to hijack thread but I've been mind building my steering system and I wondered what stage box to do and has anybody done the Ehrenberg pump modification with a Firm Feel box? I want to end up with something that has the feel of a 70's Trans Am. Adding a cooler also as soon as I can find something that looks correct and mounts to Saginaw pump.
