Having a Privacy fence installed has done wonders for me. Keeps the "barn finders" at bay and keeps the drunks next door from playing soccer and softball in my backyard. (less beer bottles to pick up when I cut the grass) Even then, I did have one vehicle pull up and ask if I wanted to sell any of my old cars recently. It kind of freaked me out..... Apparently, they were driving by when I had the fence door open for a few moments....and saw the Charger and Satellite

Back about 30 years ago several of my buddies and I went to a car show here in Illinois. I had my 74 Charger, we had a 73 Cuda a 73 Challenger and a Superbird. After walking around looking at others cars in the afternoon we came back to our cars. When we got back my buddies Superbird had a big scratch down the whole right quarter panel as if it were keyed! I always get a little nervous when people I don't know get to close to my car after that incident.

...Turns out he wanted to know what year the car was. Or he was getting the address where the car lived, where it would be more ripe for the taking, at a later date. In the security classes I give, I always recommend spending 10 or 20 bucks a month for a post office or mailbox to register your car to. That way if someone "gains access" to your registration, they don't automatically have your address (it's even worse if they steal your car with the keys in it, because then they have your house keys AND your address !! ).

Or he was getting the address where the car lived, where it would be more ripe for the taking, at a later date. That is a very scary but plausible scenario. One that I had not considered at all. I guess I have not rubbed elbows with the scum of this world enough to think like that. With that in mind......"looking for the year" does seem like a pretty flimsy excuse.

My elbows will never come clean, even after years of Lava soap, Tom. The best cops are the ones who think most like a crook. (Uproariously laughing.)
Here's another quickee for you:
You jump in your car at the supermarket, put your keys in ignition, start car, look up, and see a note on the outside of your windshield, pinned by your wipers (or whatever).
You automatically jump out of your running car, step around your open door, and grab the note....which is exactly when the carjacker jumps into your OPENED DOOR car, slams it into drive (or reverse), and you're left standing there, holding the worthless "note".
Now he's got your car, probably your house keys, your address (it's on your registration, remember?), and if you're a female he's got all of your credit cards and other ID because you threw your purse over into the passenger seat before you started the car.
Odds are while you're trying to call the police on your cell phone (unless you always keep it in your purse--or threw it over onto the center console or seat) the perp is already going through your house and/or garage, cleaning it, and you, out!!
I'm just full of fun scenarios, aren't I ??
Side Note and Advice: Never never never leave ANYTHING in your unattended car...NOTHING...EVER !! Even a sweater, coat, jacket, wife's stethoscope (personal experience). hat, gloves, extra shoes....NOTHING VISIBLE. Think "homeless people"...think druggies looking for pawn/selling materials....think broken window....think just enough replacement cost to hurt, but still under your deductible.
I empty my truck interior out every night, and LEAVE THE DOORS UNLOCKED...take it from 20 years on the street: that locked door is not going to prevent anyone from getting in that wants in badly enough....and window replacements, molding replacements, bent door frame replacements, door key lock replacements aren't cheap, are they ?
[Hey, maybe I should create a "Jer's Security Corner", huh?] (insert big smile here)
Okay, I'm done with the hi-jack.
