since the 71-72 bumper configuration resulted in body damage at the specified impact speeds, I've never felt particularly good about the gas tank being so close to the bumper . . . An understandable concern, but one that history has shown not to really be a problem at all. The only rear tank car with a bad reputation is the Pinto. And I'd argue that even that is not fully deserved....but I digress. Ma Mopar used that same rear tank design on B and R bodies up to the end (for Rs) in 1981.

Any tank is subject to rupture if hit hard enough. All the newer cars have plastic tanks. They eventually leak like all the others too. They would seem even less safe I would think.

They would seem even less safe I would think. I don't know. ....I have seen some plastic tanks take impacts that metal tanks would have never survived. Customer ran a deer over on I-20 at 70 mph and was towed in to the shop I worked at. Bottom of car was covered in blood, guts, and deer hair. The impact broke the fuel pump module/assembly inside that tank, but amazingly the tank was fine and leak free. I also dropped a plastic tank out of a truck/suv by accident one day...... from about 6-7 ft in the air. No issues whatsoever.

The guy who posted this pic on Deviant Art says it's a 72 SE, but as far as I know the bumper fillers didn't show up till 73, and the tailights are 73-74. The tail lights might fit on a 72 but from what I gather on forums, the 73-74 bumpers stick out a little further (now that I look it's real obvious the rear bumper sticks out), so the filler probably wouldn't fit on a 72. I definitely don't know everything about these cars though! The rear quarter panels do look more 72 . . . Definitely a 72. C-pillars were also different from the 73's
