Hi,
I am going to be painting the engine bay in my 71 charger. Am I able to just lightly scuff up the old paint with a steel wool brush and sandpaper? then apply high heat primer and paint.

If it's in good shape you can. That means little peeling, no rust with the surface intact. Power wash or scrub well with a degreaser using a red skotchbrite. Reclean with degreaser till there is no color on your shop towels and prime bare areas or feathered areas. Sand, reclean and seal or complete prime so surface is one color. No need for hi heat paint but best to use some kind of a quality paint. Mopars were body color under the hood so expect some booing from the crowd if you cheap out and blast it Chevy satin black.

Not sure the level of restoration your after but I have never been dissatisfied if I sand blast it clean to the metal and epoxy primer to seal it then color paint.....the time spent is just a little more(good crushed glass blasting setup)and the result is superior. that anything less than body color under the hood does not go well with true mopar fans.

Thank you for the advice 1ol74charger4me and 71rt4speed. I have definitely heard that quite a few times, engine bay and body will most certainly be the same color.
