Hey guys, I am trying to work out which is the factory correct hot water control valve for my 73 Charger. Its a big block car and came with this type which I assume is the correct one; But also there is a replacement part; and also; They will all work but would like the correct one. They are all around the same price so that is not a factor. Cheers

The correct one I am quite sure is the bottom one (red/black one) .....the other one's are after market replacements

There was another thread on this recently too...I think Bob (Odzking) indicated the same as glr...the red and black one is likely what it was built with, but they were a troublesome design, and replaced by the designs you see above. I'll see if I can find that thread.

Well GLR, Jason and I have been going round on this topic for a while. We both had (first pic) on our cars. The second pic IS the Mopar replacement as it superseded a short time after. I can only assume it was because the ceramic would crack and leak. I have the second one on there now as it is technically correct. But the folks at Carlisle this year said the ceramic on was from the factory. I personally had never seen one before ... but hey! So the question still remains, which is factory correct for 73. 74 would be the second pic.

When I had to replace it because of a leak I purchased the replacement, pic 2.

Yep, it sure is a mystery. The general information filtering back appears to be, that pic 3 is the original and were notorious for cracking. According to some sources, they were used in 72-74 B bodies and 70-74 E bodies. But, the question still remains was this the one, and more importantly I guess, if you buy a factory correct valve for a driver will it crack and put you back to square 1. My thoughts are to go with Bobs idea of using the superseded version as its not technically incorrect as it was Mo par's solution to a problem.

well, I can tell you that in 1971 the water valve was vacuum operated and it was red and black and in 1972 they went to a cable design (the red and black one in picture)

Ok, that makes sense. Its most likely that the red/black model was used from 72-74 on B and E bodies and not earlier as mentioned before.

Mine had the second one on it and that is what it got back on it. I have looked at a lot of 74's and never seen the ceramic one on one yet.
