First, disconnect the battery , drain the engine coolant, remove the radiator hoses and radiator, then I start with unbolting everything I can from under the car->exhaust,starter&remove,motor mount to "K"frame bolts, as many bell housing bolts as you can get off, remove all four torq converter bolts (the bolts that bolt the converter to the flex plate) then from up top, remove the distributor cap-take a marker and mark the distributor/block so that you can reinstall it in the same location-if you need to. Remove the distributor and disconnect the fuel lines. Remove ground straps that go from the engine to the body-(there should be at least one) Make your wiring harness if you need to so you know were things get hooked up and remove harness from engine. If you only have a chain to bolt to the engine, I would remove the carb so it doesn't get damaged and tape off the intake so noting gets in the intake manifold. Make sure you use grade 5 bolts to bolt through your chain and into the engine block, one in front and one in back opposet sides is best.

Everything above, also power steering pump and AC if so equipped. No need to disconnect, just tie them aside.
