Hi Everyone,
Since my car isn't numbers matching nor very rare, I've been toying with the idea of making some minor visual modifications. I would be working with beat up parts since they'll be getting worked over and painted and also to avoid ruining something on the market that could go to someone who is more of a purist or more in need. Let me start by saying, I am a fan of the split bumper appearance on my 1971 Charger and adore the design of the grille inserts. However, I'm more fond of the 1968 front end and I'm thinking about making some changes for a different look that could have the potential to look factory, but with my own little twist. Please forgive my terrible knock off photo shop jobs here, but you get the idea. In all examples the center vertical part of the bumper would be cut out, the remaining metal tucked behind, and then filled in for a more consistent appearance. The first example builds on the existing design of the 1971 grille, just with the elimination of the center bar. The other two are bastardized versions of the 1970 and 1971 challenger grilles.
The current grille is from a 73-74 Charger and ever so slightly different. I pulled the grille inserts out to toss in the proper 1971 units just to see how they line up so even the bumper itself is not original to the car, but also too nice to cut up so I'd be looking for a more beat up one and not to sacrifice this one
Has anyone modified their front bumper in a similar fashion and what are the general thoughts? If I like it myself I may just do it regardless, but feel free to lay into it. This is not my first time on a car forum
