So what was the return line for? Was that for cars/trucks with a vent up around the top of the filler neck? Or something else entirely?

HiPo cars. Gas filters got an extra tee for that

Voltage limiter would affect also temp and oil guages

Check voltage limiter in dash If you read my post from the 15th, you'll see I've already determined something is funky with the sender. And Nacho is correct... limiter would affect the other two gauges as well.
I'm laying tile in the bathroom right now. Once I get past this bathroom project, and then install a new garage door, I plan on pulling the sender and see if I can correct the problem.

UPDATE
Just returned from sea a couple of weeks ago... been gone for three months. This morning, got under the car to remove fuel tank sender. Was pretty simple to do with the tank still in the car.… only had to lower the tail pipe on that side a few inches.
The sender that was in there is new... nice and shiny with a stainless strap going from the rheostat to the connection post. Put a meter on it and moved it up and down. The readings were good and had a nice curve without any dead spots.
So then I look in the hole of the tank and can see a tube in there. Hmmm... I guess it's one of those vent tubes. From what I can see, it looks like it rests pretty close to where the sender would be. Since this sender has a steel strap for the circuit instead of an insulated wire, I can see that if the tube got too close to the strap and made contact, I'd end up with a ground and as a result, a gauge running all the way to the top of the scale.
Since it seemed I didn't really have a way to move the vent tubing out of the way, I decided to see if I could reposition the sender's connection strap off to the side a little bit... just enough to give it some clearance from that tube.
I had noted that occasionally, the fuel gauge would indeed read correctly... just not for very long. So that meant the tubing and the strap would sometimes stop touching. With that in mind, movement of the strap would likely only need to be a little bit.
After putting it all back together, the gauge again reads as it should! ** Went to the gas station and filled up... then ran some errands and it seems that all is well in the cosmos again! After driving about 50 miles, I could definitely see that the gauge was starting to drop off the full mark.
If this sender had used an insulated wire instead of a bare strap, this wouldn't have been a problem.
On a side note, if you take the sender out, be cautious when the screen comes through the hole in the tank. While I was taking readings on the sender, I noticed that the screen on the end of the tube slides off somewhat easily. Had I caught that screen on the edge of the tank hole while removing it, it could have easily slid off the tube and dropped into that tank! Then I would have had to either remove the tank to get the screen out, or head down to Oreilly's to get another sender. Guess that depends on how much it was worth it to me to NOT have to remove the tank.

Screen is available by itself... so you could install one new on sender and keep the other one inside the tank LOL...
BUT think on this: could get damaged or stuck the floater arm or brass itself when laying around

Yes, you're right... it would definitely get stuck in the arm just for the hell of it! I'm just glad mine did not fall off when I removed the sender.
