Clarifying this here... so a tag with N41 only is dual exhaust/no fancy tips/no fancy rear valance, and if you have N41 & N42 you get duals with fancy tips and the valance with the two notches?
My car is an N41 car... but I had wondered if I was supposed to have the notches in the rear valance or not.

Charlie, was your car a Lynch Rd or St Louis build? I'm asking cause the 383 in '71 came standard w/duals and Lynch Rd didn't stamp the tag with the code. They only stamped codes on the tag that required a modification to the body.

Curious... Why didn't Lynch Rd. stamp the codes on tags? I feel that I would likely be disappointed if I didn't have all my codes on the fender tag.

Don't know. It widely know they didn't stamp many. When I studied it I figured out that only the things that required some modifications to the body were. Example: 26" radiator require a larger support opening. Console - supports on tunnel. A/C - extra holes in firewall. Tinted glass - nuff said. 😁 Concealed headlights - extra brackets for doors, etc.
These are the only codes on my tag even though I have a car with 18 options over and above the SE package. I do have a nearly complete build sheet found under the rear seat and recently found what I believe to be, at first glance, a 2nd identical sheet under the passenger seat. Haven't really inspected it yet. It's quite tore up from the springs but more complete. From what I've seen of Lynch Rd fender tags this holds true.

Yeah, Lynch Road here, and with missing factory interior (and build sheet), I will never be able to PROVE what my cars original configuration was. Fortunately the VIN tells you it's a 340, and thus a Rallye. Otherwise, I wouldn't even be able to prove that.

My car is an N41 car... but I had wondered if I was supposed to have the notches in the rear valance or not. From what I was told, N41 was dual exhaust only and no notches in the valance. If your tag also had N42 with N41, dual exhaust with the tips and the valance came with the notches. Supposedly when the cars came down the line, the workers would see on the sheets the codes. If they saw the N42 code, the car would get the valances with the notches. My car was made in St. Louis.

My car has tips on the exhaust, but no notches. I think the dealer I bought the car from put the tips on there. I do not like the look of it with tips without the notches. I tried to removed them, but had difficulty due to the curve of the tailpipe on the port side. Starboard side came right off, but then put it back on once I realized they wouldn't both come off. I should have had the muffler shop remove them when I put the new mufflers on.

N42 is technically chrome tips but I don't believe you could get them without cutouts for them.
