IIRC, these sockets are all metal, with the exterior of the housing forming the fingers that snap them into the tail lamp, and give it a ground path? If so, I'd fabricate some long jumper wires with some large alligator clips. Larger than these, but you get the idea. Attach one clip to the negative terminal of the battery. Touch the other end to the metal housing of those sockets, providing a redundant ground. If system performance improves, you know you have found the point where the ground is bad. If system performance remains the same, move on to another socket, the housing itself, the ground point in the rear, etc.
