It's been pretty wild. The defenders of his have largely disappeared, at least in the comments of this article. But there are still some out there.

Interesting story. Im a little confused. who has the van now? It seems to me that he took the van off of private property and doesn't have any proof that the land owners gave him permission. Permission is the first thing you get and keep that proof with you. Yes it seems that she waited until the van was restored to make a claim. It doesn't seem that she (the owners) is all up front about things either. Regardless, even if she did wait for the restoration to be completed to make the claim , He doesn't have proof of permission.

The van went missing when they arrested Carter. It was later found and impounded by the police. It was totally stripped, and spray-painted over. While it still has all the body repairs done, it is arguable that striped as it is, it's in worse shape than when Carter found it.
At least one person has asserted that when the police impound a vehicle like that, it's via a private lot, where the vehicle is racking up storage fees at a rate of $25 or so per day. By the time this goes to trial, and the woman legally establishes it is her van, the storage fees on the shell will be so high, that it may well end up being scrapped anyway.
But there are so many ways this could go...that's what makes this train wreck interesting to watch.

I'm guessing Carter had someone grab everything that was salvageable . It would make sense that both parties just go their own way at this point. I'm sure someone will start a lawsuit. Possibly the people that stripped the van (if caught) will face legal issues.

You do know that is a 1970 Chrysler color called "Panther Pink", code FM3. Guess I have been lucky enough to have never seen it. Glad my neighbors in the North East have some taste. I'm familiar with "other" neon colors (I.E. Sublime, Green Go, Go Mango, Plum Crazy, Hemi O (my orange cat is named Hemi), Citrom Yellow, top , etc.), but never saw Pink. Thanks C440six!
