Rick, I was also wondering if the blank ID pad was a boat thing. That might help explain how many "unstamped warranty blocks" end up for sale, many times commanding serious $$. The reverse rotation cam subject is also very interesting. Interesting stuff for sure!

Reverse rotaion requires a reverse cut distributor drive gear on the cam & distributor/oilpump driveshaft. OR a direct driven set of cam timing gears. It is either the whole rotating assembly going backwards or just the crank. The good news is that most marine engines turn over just like a car......only half of the twin engine set ups are backwards

Did boats have VIN's back then? Now?
Any federal laws regarding boats and "matching numbers"?
If not, the blank pad makes sense.

The Cris Craft my 312 came out of was a twin engine boat & the engine SN is stamped on a distintly non automotive part. The numbers are also completely foriegn to what car numbers look like - just as hotrodders' does.

Just for the records... I pulled apart this marine 440 engine that I got because I wanted the block. Check out this "reverse" cam (I think). There are 3 cams in the pics. The 3-bolt cam is the marine cam. Also shown is a normal used 440 cam (center) and a brand new, just out of the box 268XH Comp cam. Look closely at the difference in the lobes. The front timing chain gear setup looked like a normal 440, but this cam is definately different. Pics to follow, not working right now...

Thats interesting, i wouldnt have guess a big differnce in the engine's. Might have to keep my eye open for a 440 powered boat.
