My headlights dim at idle, but I can still take off a battery cable and the engine will keep running.

There is no need for such primitive (backwoods) methods. Do it on a late model vehicle and you can destroy the ECM/PCM, which can get expensive real fast.

Good article, Tom. Only I didn't really come away with a solution other than bumping the idle speed 2-300, and picking up an electronic voltage reg. It suggested that most of the late model alternators are wound wrong for thses old Mopars. So, do we look for an older alt. at our local junkyard? Or maybe just live with headlights that dim at idle.

Good article!!!... didn't know about the rotor resitance difference... all that I have checked are around 5 ohms... probably 7 if I check throught brushes. never have found one less than 4.5 ohms The fact is also laters alt have a bigger stator, able to capture more magnetic field

I really don't drive it much at night, will I do any damage just living with the dimming lights at idle?

Think I'll bump my idle, too, Dan. Good idea! ;D
