For what it's worth - my 72's been in my family since new. No catch bottle. Hmmm...this is interesting. I wonder what the rhyme/reason is for them having/not having one. Throw this into the mix: My 72 SE 440 HP bought new had an overflow bottle (factory), My 72 SE 440 HP restoration project came w/ an overflow bottle, My 72 SE 318 future daily driver came w/ a factory overflow bottle (although that doesn't mean it was factory installed) As you say....where's the rhyme or reason? Might be a state thing or Plant thing... Might be an engine size thing... Might be an "I feel good today, I think I'll install an overflow bottle" thing, via an anonymous factory line-worker...

No real mystery about the N76 (aka Maximum Cooling) Coolant Recovery System other than "why it is so rare"? The system set-up is 1972 only - later years were different. It was an option that had to be checked seperately - actually written in. N76 is not on the blank order form I have. It was part of A35 (trailer towing) package. It is not listed seperately in any of the dealer info I've seen. Its location on the broadcast sheet has no option name. No mystery at all! It was available on cars with HD/26" radiators. In my '72 Rallye registry, I have 9 cars with N76: 8 Hardtops;1 Coupe. 3 340 cars; 1 400 car; 5 440 cars 5 4 speeds; 4 autos 5 were also N96 Ramcharger hood cars 7 built at Lynch Rd., 2 at St. Louis Earliest build is Nov 5 1971 Latest build is June 2 1972 (my car) It mounts off the Rad support and consists of a bottle and 3 brackets. 1st bracket is rivited to the bottle. 2nd is bolted to rad support and 1st bracket bolts to it. 3rd bracket mounts to lower rad support by frame rail and the bottom of the bottle rests in it. The bottle in the auction above is actually one that I sold a while back (for over $100). The reproduction is NOT correct for a '72. It may work, but it "ain't right". I will re-take pics of mine (not in the car now), but here is a pic of the correct system in a friends car:

No problem...but I'm not done. I just found a bunch of old stuff that helps out even more. Feast your eyes... OK, I know I'm probably the only dork this excited about an exploded view with part numbers...
