I just looked at the Edelbrock carb number on my 440. It is a 1406, which is a 600cfm with the electric choke. I have no clue whats been done internally but it has a definite lope cam, fairly high lift to be assumed. It also has a Offenhauser 360 alum intake and headers. The car pulls hard when driven but I am kinda scared she will be lean on top. Any of you gear head guys think a 750 would be a better choice on a carb? Sorry, its still dirty. I have not got my garage cleaned out to get it in to start working/cleaning the car up and stripping her down. Gary

A 600 does seem smallish for a built 440. A factory TQ would have been an 850.
A 750 seems a reasonable step up. Though I'm also a big believer in "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".

Thanks Dave. I too am a believer but do not want to hurt anything either. I will check the plugs after a hard run and take a look, later snowing again today. Hopefully its got large jets and the proper metering rods, and at 6,000+ ft above sea level, that usually keeps things on the rich side. lol Gary

750 all the way......The one that keeps being reccomended to me is the Proform 750 double pumper... 600 is way to small.......even for a SBC.....

I ran the same carb on my 400 and quickly went back to the TQ. It seemed to beg for fuel at the mid to top end. In your case, bigger is better.

the 318 in my 74 came with a 1406 on top of it. would agree that unless it is jetted right and the rods are correct, it would be a bit small......and the 1406 is known to be an "economy" carb, with a little kick for performance. I use the term economy VERY LOOSELY!...(laughing out loud). for my 318 or a mild 360 the 600 would be ok, but as said, for a built up 440, a little on the small side......just for airflow alone.

850 speed demon would be a good upgrade.. some say they are hell to tune in, but i had no issues with mine on a 400ci engine. great pull, made the edelbrock look like a lawnmower's carburetor.

I am running a Holley 650 single feed, double pumper on my 1973 and it has plenty of power up about 140mph and decent fuel mileage. My '73 has a hp400.

I have an Edelbrock 750 w/electric choke on my 440 with Edelbrock heads and intake manifold too. It runs great.

On the '69 I used to have with 440, toward the top end the 750 I had on it ended making the motor mad and starve for fuel... So my '72 that I have now will be getting a fuel giving 850 double pumper...
