the fuel gauge in my 73 is acting up. it quit working about 2 k miles ago. when car is started, fuel gauge reads empty. started acting up last summer, sometimes, when tank filled it would only read half full or 3/4 full, erratic. then it quit as stated earlier, the other day car was parked on on incline, went to start it and gauge moved to 1/2 full where I knew it should be. has worked OK since then. when I filled it up the gauge went to full. however, today it went to E when car was started. could this erratic behavior be the result of a bad ground? any help is appreciated.

If all of your grounds check out good, then it's new fuel sending unit (and float and sock filter) time!!
Not that hard to replace them, comparatively speaking.

Im having the same problem.
For a while every time I went up an incline the gauge would go to zero and stay there. A day later it would work fine until I went up another hill. Finally it just quit altogether. I replaced the sending unit and that didn't fix the problem. I also hooked up my oil pressure gauge wires to the fuel gauge and the fuel gauge moved so I'm fairly certain the gauge works. I guess its time to start tracing wires...

You'd be surprised how goofy they'll act if they're not grounded properly. That would be the first thing to check because they become loose and/or rot away back at the tank. If that does not do it, then you probably have burnt wires in the gauge. In that case www.thegaugedoc.com/

The aftermarket sending units are notorious for not working properly. Just because a new one has been installed does not eliminate it from suspicion. Nacho has some posts about that. Ground the sending unit wire.....the gauge should peg out. If it does not, the issue is wiring/gauge. If it does peg out, the issue is in the tank (sending unit)

How was the sending unit originally grounded?

Usually just a strap or a wire from the gauge base to the frame. You'd thing the fact that it sits in the tank and the tank is strapped to the body would be enough, but it isn't. But just a piece of wire and a clamp will do it.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't there a rubber gasket between the sender and the fuel tank to seal the opening? This gasket also has the effect of insulating the sender (electrically) from the tank/chassis. Hence the need for the ground strap...
