Well....I have learned some good lessons today. After spending the better part of the afternoon hunched over sitting on the floor assembling-disassembling-reassembling'.....motors, I have 2 together and working. My hands are covered in paint and "right stuff" gasket sealer, and my back is killing me. What I learned is .......do not disassemble a bunch of motors from different years and randomly try to put all those parts back together. My parts shown were scavenged from 8-9 motors. I have realized that there are similar but different parts at work, depending on the motor in question. There are two distinctly different length motor shafts....and possibly 2 different head castings. There are likely other differences that I have yet realized. In the future, I will do one motor at a time.

I know that I kind of am skipping the re-assembly process....but I got wrapped up in the tasks at hand and stopped taking pictures. I will revisit the reassembly at a later date. I still have one more to assemble and one more semi working core. Anyway.....here are some pics of the 3 finished, tested, and working motors. Its kind of funny that the silver that I thought was too bright is now looking darker due to me handling the motors so much during assembly.

Thanks Dave. I finally got the "bottom half" of the 4th motor working. I am having difficulty with the limit switches though. One function (open or close) works, the other function does not. I went ahead and called it a day. I can't stress enough how important it is to clean/smooth the shaft as good as you can before putting everything back together. Twice I had to disassemble a motor to do more sanding on the rusty/corroded shaft. This area....

That's where the bushing goes? Is it a problem of getting the bushing back on if it is not cleaned up properly?
Also, what is that bushing made of? Were you able to reuse the originals? If so, how did you remove them from the rusty shaft without destroying them?

If so, how did you remove them from the rusty shaft without destroying them? Dave. there is a bushing installed in the head...and a bushing installed in the lower section. The shaft with the stuck bushing was off an old motor I had. In that case....I basically ruined the bottom end trying to get it out. I broke the brush plate up pretty badly. I did re-use that shaft today. I grabbed the bushing with a pair of vice grips, squirted in some PB blaster and slowly worked the bushing off of the shaft. 3 different length motor shafts..... bushing in head section bushing in lower section, below brush plate. I finally got the 4th motor working. I finally resorted to looking in a 71 FSM to better understand the limit switches. cleaned them with a shot of brake clean, made a minor adjustment..... and had success.

Looks good Tom. Where do you get those bearings and washers? I'm down to my last working set. I'm working on having gaskets made for the switch plates as I can use the 15 or so minutes it takes to cut one out for other tasks.
How did you get the shafts out of the brush plate bushings without pulling the bushing out? I wind up taking the brush holder off the end plate to re-install the bushing.
I know where you can get new gears for your motors too.
You gonna be around next weekend? I'm coming to Atlanta with my wife for the weekend. She'll be in class everyday and I'm looking for somewhere to hang out for a few hours on Friday and Saturday.
