I meant to post the comparison pics of a 904 and 727 trans pans. The pic on the top is off the 727. Having a 727 instead of 904 is not cause for celebration. I guess in stock form. the 727 is a little stouter, however the 904 is lighter. From what I`ve read, because of the weight savings... SB mopar racers usually beef up 904`s for racing applications. I guess the E34 code really means nothing more than torqueflite trans. That really is not very definitive as 904`s, 727 (BB) and 727(SB) are all torqueflites. Seems kind of stupid to me here is the pan pics

so it might be better to use a 904 trans for high performance instead of a 727? not in stock form of course but if i rebuild it right? a 904 trans would not fit on a big block right? only 727s and 833s? i want to put a big block in my 71 some years from now and since i already have a 727 maybe i should keep it until its ready?

grasshopper , just to confuse you a little more....there are 3 types of 727`s 727-RG used on 6 cyl 225, 727-A used on 318,340,360 and the 727-B used on 383, 400, 426, and 440. a 727-A cannot be used on a big block, nor can a 727-B be used on a small block. and to completely blow your mind... there are 2 versions of the 904 904-G used on 198 and 225 and 904-LA used on 318`s

ok so i know i have a 904 A bc my 71 charger has a 318. now about that 727 it must be a 727 B bc the engine it came with was a 400. if not those then what can the 727 B be applied with? in the automatics those were 3 speeds right?

Yer making me dazed and confused grasshopper, but I will do my best. Am I correct in that you have a 71 318/904 but are asking about a 73 D34/ E63 fender tag? The 400 2 bbl engine would have come with a 727-B
I mis-typed something in my previous post that may have confused you. I went ahead and corrected it.

ok thanks Tom ;D . have you ever had this much of a problem explaining this to anyone? its a long learning curve but im getting there! #yesnod# Actually, I had a MUCH harder time explaining to someone else once before. For some reason they REALLY wanted to believe that they had a 727. After 10 or so exasperating posts, I finally was able to convince them to look at the pan. So, in Dans case he has a 727 with his 318 which goes against everything I have ever understood to be true. I wonder if his was for some reason specially ordered that way? Hey Dan, do you have a build sheet on your car? That would be interesting to look at.
