Do you know how it got to the point of being parted out, Gadabra?
Or should I wait for a suitable period of mourning
before I ask any questions?
I thought I recognized that car as being yours from many years ago. It is sad that they end up that way but back then they were just plain cars. Who would have thought that so many different models would become so popular.
Nah, you're OK to ask probing questions ;D
Don't know anything really other than the body shell was also listed (can't find that now) as being in good nick. The guy went on to say my old Charger was being used as a parts car for another Charger.
Anyhow, when I bought it in 1978 the (not) original paint looked a bit suspect so I had a fiddle around the headlamp and succeeded in pulling off a huge patch of paint clean away from the fender! Underneath was another layer of silver paint. I guess it had had a cheap re-paint prior to being shipped over. A friend of mine explored further (he was a painter by trade) and discovered a bullet hole all the way through both metal skins on the drivers side just behind the door! It had also received some minor accident damage down the same side. I've always had this exciting idea it was used in some bank heist and was shipped over here to remove the evidence.
So we repainted it as you see it in the top image. The front bumper was slightly twisted but I found another on a Brougham which is why you can see the chrome strips in the grills on the ebay link.
After painting the car decided it didn't like the oil filter and so stopped using it. The sudden loss of pressure took out the rod bearings. I never did find out what was wrong with the filter but I never used the make again.
Back on the road again, I parked up, walked 'round the back and thought there was something over the rear end of the car. Rubbing my hand over the paintwork showed where most of the transmission fluid now lived...
Did you know 727 transmissions are very popular in fork lift trucks? I do now. So after a trans rebuild we were back and running and it did run very well indeed. You may think I'm exaggerating but this was one of the best riding cars I have EVER owned. Sure it couldn't go round corners like a sports car but the smooth ride and crisp handling were excellent for something this size.
The engine had a mild work over resulting in 15 sec quarters (400 cu in) but in the end the guy who imported it wanted it back. And he had something I wanted...
The link on ebay is the first I have seen of it in the last 28 years!
RIP ol' friend
