How do you disassemble the odometer? I want to replace one of the number wheels. I've recorded my original mileage & I know how to roll the dials to preserve that 74651.1 number in the little window. (The original was vandalized & I'm putting in a replacement) See both odometers have a little rubbing block that basically rubs out the digit on the left once it passes the little window. Seems to me like my mileage is actually 174651.1 because the 8 & 9 are rubbed on too. Just to be more accurate: the numbers aren't completely rubbed out just noticably more faded or scratched.
Pics coming soon.

Brock, Is all of that really necessary to satisfy Louisiana State or something? Here in California, anything over 10 years old can be just marked EXEMPT on the mileage portion of a title transfer. Unless your car (or anyone else's, for that matter) is OBVIOUSLY a "less than a 100 grand miles car", why not just put the other odometer in as a complete unit? I might be missing something here, but I can't see myself bragging that my car only has 174,000 miles on it, versus 148,000 or even 192,000. Again, unless I was ready to prove that it in fact only had 74,000 original miles, I wouldn't go to the trouble to change the "new" odometer reading to what your original odometer read. Fill me in, Ol' Buddy...I obviously need some enlightenment on this!! ;D ;D Oh, and I do remember from my car selling days that "re-numbering" an odometer used to be a crime here, unless it was done by a California BAR (Bureau of Auto Repair) licensed Speedometer Technician, and then only if he had the original speedo in front of him for purposes of odometer-reading verification. Jer.

Yeah Jer we have the EXEMPT mileage option on cars over 10 years old too. Asking questions about odometers raises red flags. I wanted to dispell any misgivings that anyone that could help me might have. What I'm trying to do is so far beyond turning the numbers to read what I want them to read that I felt trying to preserve my integrity up front to be important. All right. Lets just forget all that & go with the basic question: "Which end presses off the tumbler spindle? Is it the splined gear end or the counterweight end?" Notice the last black spool on both units? Thats the rub. I don't want to leave it like that. Thats what this thread boils down to. What are our options on this. All feedback is welcome.

I've resolved my question with this: If it feels like it may lead to fraud or wronging someone else - it's not worth pursueing. I'll leave this topic with the same pic that I start my next topic.

Hey Brock, #WaveHi# I KNOW you didn't think I was implying any criminal misbehavior on your part.. What I WAS getting at was basically the question of why you are going to all the trouble "dissecting" the things--to use your own eloquent term!! In other words, Doc, why the whole surgery operation to begin with?...is there something you're hoping to accomplish with respect to the numbers on the new one being the same as the numbers on the old one? It's just a puzzler for "The Jer" that only you can (and hopefully will) answer... And I sincerely hope my Crawfish Bisque isn't in any jeopardy!! [I've been drooling for the entire 6 months since your first mention of said Bisque!!] P.S. What camera and resolution are you using, Brock?... Your posted closeup pics are without a doubt the best on this site!! Jer.

Hey Brock, #WaveHi# I KNOW you didn't think I was implying any criminal misbehavior on your part.. Of course notWhat I WAS getting at was basically the question of why you are going to all the trouble "dissecting" the things--to use your own eloquent term!! In other words, Doc, why the whole surgery operation to begin with?...is there something you're hoping to accomplish with respect to the numbers on the new one being the same as the numbers on the old one? [I've been drooling for the entire 6 months since your first mention of said Bisque!!] Well, Jer, I like knowing how things work. Having a practically useless set of gauges allows me the chance to rip them apart carefully to see how not to tear them apart. In other words, if I can actually repair them then I know how far I can go to restore any part of a good set that needs work to become show quality. I opted not to go that deep into the odometer, because there are going to be Hemi forgors out there that will scam anyone for a buck. I won't help them to know something that, like you say doesn't matter on a regular car anyway. I'm preserving the actual mileage on my cars odometer for my own benefit. Holly says you're getting Crawfish Bisque - it's out of my hands now P.S. What camera and resolution are you using, Brock?... Your posted closeup pics are without a doubt the best on this site!! Jer. Thats a Nikon CoolPix 2000 on a tripod. Not really expensive at all & with this nut behind the wheel really sucks without the tripod.

While further disecting the speedo I noticed more about the little rubber of the odometer wheel. Yellow is the cam on the odometer & cam follower on the rubbing block arm. So it is not merely vibration that rubs the paint off the wheel but a wiping motion set into motion by the cam. Red is the rubbing block & the rub results on the wheel. Green can be seen in Speedo Disection!
