I own a 1974 SE with a 318. What should the Amp rating on the alternator be? Motor and car are completely stock. I find all kinds of alternators from 50, 60, 65, 78 and 114 Amps. I don't want to overpower my charging system. I would think around 60-65 Amps would be about right I just don't know. Anyone have an idea? Thanks. #Bump#

mostly alts where on 50-60 rate... higher amps where used on fully equipped cars, mostly with tow package, or taxi or police package. Then they got extra wiring for charging system.
that's at least what wiring diagrams say

Thanks for the heads-up. I wonder if I could get away with running a 78 Amp with no problems ?
