Boy, lots of possibilities here. I'd start with the gas. Did you treat it before storage? Even at that, 3 year old gas could be trouble.

No it's not the gas i had the tank off in january to replace the sending unit. i belive the backfiring was caused by my electrical problem the car lost all power I tried to start the car by touching the 2 pos. posts on the firewall the engine turns but I have no spark from the coil. my passenger thet was with me said the she smelled something burning while i was looking under the hood.

When you make reference to your "electrical problem" are you referring to your "cross-jumping" of the two posts and/or the burning odor, or was there another electrical issue prior to this incident? Back to the basics always works, especially since you don't have a spark (my basic rule has always been "check for spark then check for fuel"). This thread is an excellent, all-compassing thread with some very very excellent posts in it by Nacho--our 3rd Gen Guru--and even I contributed somewhat.... wichargerguy.proboards101.com/index.cgi?board=electrical&action=display&thread=568&page=1There's some stuff in there that won't apply to your problem, especially at the beginning, but if you read and study the whole thread, I think it will help you. It's helped out more than one member in its "lifetime" here on the site. Give it a shot!! Then if none of the hints, suggestions, methods, or instruction in it gets you going, let us know that and we'll go from there!! It's always better to "get back to the basics" than to start randomly replacing parts in a haphazard attempt to find out what part went bad.... that "hit and miss" method can be expensive AND often futile!! Jer.

All right here are my findings so far. Batt. is fully charged with new cables no corrosion on posts. I have power going to the relay. I pulled my instrument cluster to check the wiring due to me installing a new radio over the winter I thought maybee I wired something wrong but everything seems ok. I do not have any power at the cluster. I also checked the ground strap from the engine block to the fire wall and its ok. I tried to wiggle all the wires I could to get the lights to come on and didnt get anything. I did not have any electical problems prior to yesterday. I started the car every other day or so and let it warm up just to keep the juices flowing. Im sure its something simple but i am beating myself up trying to figure this out. I am very gratful to anybody who suggests anything

I'm guessing all the fuses are fine.... And by checking the wires, by wiggling them, no loose connections have been found.... But there's no power to the cluster.... Did you check all the wires under the hood? Esp around the firewall bulkhead? Since you said the battery is charged, and you've seen no corrosion, then.... Where is ol Nacho.... I'd double check the under hood wires as well... Something may have gotten a bit too much resistance, and melted under the hood since you said you didn't see anything behind the cluster and such.... Be sure to pay attention to your fusible links also they're quite famous for going bad.... After all, isn't there purpose to try and save the harness and such by going out.....

check ammeter studs for loosen nuts
check fuse link, after you fried the black wire could blow out
anyway that doesn't ( or shouldn't ) have relation with backfire.
BTW that black wire burnt on short ARRIVES TO AMMETER, so could get burnt inside the cab too
