Pictures would help too. I know you guys have talked about different numbers of vents. I don't even understand the different bulge hoods. Things get changed so I never know which is the original for that year. Are there always engine designations to the side of the bulge?

I don't have pictures of everything, but here are a few. I'll not bother to show the flat hoods, except to say that the cowl louver scheme mentioned below applies to them as well. My '72 Bulge hood. See the gap in the louvers at the cowl. That makes this a '72. A '71 would have no gap...all louvers. A '73 Bulge hood. Just a few louvers, a very large gap in between. A '74 has no louvers at all. These are rules of thumb. There's always the possibility that an early or late build could get a different hood than the "norm". There's also the issue of service replacement parts, which are generally thought to have had no louvers, but I don't think that's etched in stone either. I think the '74s could be had without a callout? Here's a Superbee with a louvered (at the center) hood. I'll let some of the other guys explain when and where this was used. It's '71 only I think. (Edit: Sorry...I've tried four times to get this image to show up...it's in Photobucket, but won't load here for some reason). (EDIT: Ha! 6th try was a charm!) This is a Ramcharger hood. With it's vacuum operated pop-up hood scoop, it's pretty distinctive. It was a free floating option for certain models (Superbees, R/Ts, Rallyes), and was used in '71 and '72. Help me out where my info. is thin, or incorrect guys.

(thanks Dave!)1974 Charger hoods, two used (thanks odzking!)3752 174 Flat hood used on most models 3752 473 "Sport Hood" (power bulge) ** - In 74, the hood vents were eliminated completely.I believe all the power bulge hoods in 1971 had engine call-outs on both port and starboard and only appeared on the R/T and SuperBee. The gap between the vents (1971 models) has been an on going topic of 'discussion'. As far as I know, there are only two variations. One, a continuous row of vent opening across the back of the hood panel and two, two sets of vent opening separated by a 'gap' of unvented hood panel. There have been assertions that the width of this 'gap' also varies. The contention is primarily regarding when hoods with the 'continuous' vents were replaced with hoods with the 'gap' or vice vesa. My personal opinion is that it is more likely due to which plant manufactured the panel. The 3482018 hood - The 3482471 fresh air hood - The 3482535 hood on the R/T with the continuous vents - The 3482535 hood on the R/T with the gap between the vents - The 3482535 hood on the SuperBee with the continuous vents - The 3482535 hood on the SuperBee with the gap between the vents - You can see the insert on the SuperBee and on the R/T are the same size which allow use of the same hood panel for both. The Ram Charger is a different size. There's abundant evidence that both the R/T and SuperBee hoods occur in significant numbers with both the 'gap' and without yet there aren't two different part numbers listed in the parts manual. This is why I think it is a manufacturing plant difference. I don't have a good library of photos for the 72-74 Chargers so if you need photos of the later years, someone else will need to post'em up.

Beautiful '74. Wish I could find a bulge hood for mine. It's a 440 SE but would look so cool with a bugle. I put 71 hideaways on it too.

Here's the rub, the two numbers I listed are the only two that appear in the Nov 72 parts manual but there is a 3482 535 "W-2 D. w/F/Air" hood listed in the Apr 72 parts manual (in addition to the two above). But that's the part number of the R/T-SuperBee hood in the Jan 72 edition of the 70-71 parts manual. Are the numbers in the 70-71 manual transposed (AG vs. R/T hoods) or is the number in the Apr 72 parts manual a typo (should be 3482471)? Or is there another explanation? Did the 72 Rallye cars really use the 71 R/T-SuperBee hood with a different fresh air assembly? And the Paul Herd book is no help (surprise, surprise...) stating that the R/T-SuperBee hood and the Ram Charger hood are both listed as 3482471...

Holy Monkeys. No wonder I was confused. Okay there is a 535 using the last three numbers. 1 is a hood scoop. One is an insert with vents pointing backwards and another 535??? with an insert with call outs on the actual plastic insert? That makes 4 for 1971?
My flat hood is a 1971 with a small gap in the vents.
