I have a 440 with a 750 edelbrock carb on it and I have to let the motor turn over 6-7 times before it starts. I can smell gas after I shut it off and I think gas is evaporating from carb because of heat. (I think it runs rich too) Has anybody had this problem and do you think a thermo protection gasket would help between intake and carb? It does this regardless of outside temp. Also does gas tank sending unit come out buy turning to the left?

About the sending unit..I did this last year and yes , I recall that "lefty loosey" is how it comes off . I think the best way if not the only way is to drop the tank to remove the sending unit .
I had a hot start problem in hot weather. I don't think you do . Since you said that it doesn't matter what temperature it is outside .
When the engine was hot, I had a lot of trouble restarting it. To the point where the battery would drain while attempting to start .I did a number of things that I thought would help....changed all (rubber) fuel lines with fuel injection line . This included the 5 rubber lines connecting to the back of the fuel tank . I wrapped the lines from the carburetor to the fuel pump with high protective material. I already had the half inch thermo spacer . I also cleaned all the ground connections that I can find . A new battery. I changed the positive battery cable wire harness . In the end , the most effective change was a high torque mini starter . I'm not suggesting you do all these things . The car was new to me and I wanted to improve any thing I could think of anyway. This may give you a lead. My latest improvement (when I have time and the weather breaks) will be to change the spark plugs and wires .

My thought was gas was evaporating out of carb since I could smell it. So do you think thermal spacer helped enough for me to try one. I hate having to crank it so long in public, not conducive to cool ya know. Mine doesn't crank enough to run down battery though. Thx for the in put, in the counsel of many is wisdom.

I've read about folks adding an electric fuel pump to get the quick start. I think Bob had a thread inquiring about it . I've also read about old, porous ,rubber fuel lines emitting a fuel vapors ( smell )

I'm debating an electrical fuel pump also.

I know this is an old post but back to my original question. Has anyone used a thermo break gasket between carburetor and intake and it make a worth wile improvment? When i go uptown i think gas is boiling out of carb after engine gets hot and i turn off. It's not cool when you haft to crank engine so much to restart.

Yes, I've used a 1" phenolic spacer on a 440 that had vapor lock issues. A return line with a 3 nipple filter also helped a little as well as a mini starter.
