thanks for the time and pictures. great help. hoping to get this job done soon. I think I'm goin to try using the board with curve like the newer cars, and use insulation around the sides where theres a void as to headliner being pushed up,,, Just seems like a crap job,and yet iv'e never seen one installed in person. I see were the liner was just spray glued directly to sunroof frame and around teeth... I think the inner slider had foam? around it, not sure, seems rite to me.... My only mess on car to remedy. Just had to have a sunroof didn't yah! I'm sure when they installed these roofs, it was a Half hour job, but it seems so chinsey.....

Actually it was quite a undertaking to put one in new. They were all done in Ca. Mine was built in St. Louis, shipped to Cali., modified then shipped to dealer in Lodi Ca. ACS actually had to cut the hole, finish out the bodywork around it, reprime, install the headliner and reinstall the other parts, put the vinyl top on and reinstall the trim. Probably a 6-8 hour job. There is nothing more fun than hacking a hole in the roof of a new car! Another thing that is a bear is putting in the sunroof cassette with the doors on. I took mine out that way and it barely came out the door. It would be easier to put one in with the windshield out. The setup is kind of cheap but it was the first thoughts of how to supply a market with convertibles after the writing was on the wall that there wouldn't be any more. Thanks god they were more sophisticated than the aftermarket ones at the time. They looked like camper top and lifted up on 2 arms and leaked like crazy. I had one in a old truck. It stinks that they had to cheap out and go to cranks and lose the electric but it was one less piece to go wrong.

I have a bunch of restoration pictures from my 72 Charger SE. Really want to get a good feel for real production numbers. I have a June 72 car it is sunroof order 464. That is 464 sunroofs made for Dodge through June 6 as I understand it. Thus putting the 399 in 72 in doubt since they put them in Poland, Monaco and Challengers anybody have a higher order number?

Hey Dennis, I would love to see your sunroof restoration photos, as would a few other Charger owners I am guessing. Would you mind posting a few here? As for the numbers, I am still working on those. As you stated, yours is 464 through June 6 but 399 was the number you have. Do you have a reference for that number? Galen maybe? It could possibly be 399 for SE's only and maybe closer to 500 for all 72 Charger lines. The power sunroof was also available on 72 Barracudas and Challengers, Satellites and Road Runners, along with Plymouth Furys and Chrysler Newports, New Yorkers, and Imperials - but their Vehicle Order Numbers (VONs) started with a different prefix than the 72 Chargers (G70). I don't think the power sunroof was available in Dodge Polaras and Monacos. I have not run across any yet, and it doesn't show up as an option in the dealer documentation from 1972. Power sunroofs started showing up on Monacos in 1974 I believe.
I am working on 1970-71 Dodge Challengers at the moment, but plan to revisit the 72 Dodge/Plymouth sunroof cars soon. After that, I will move on to 73/74 Dodge/Plymouth sunroof cars, so stay tuned. Thanks, Scott.

123456md - Thanks for posting about the alternative VW parts. Makes sense because the main man at ASC came from Germany and used Golde sunroof components on the late 60s cars he put sunroofs in. Yep - $400 to $500 bucks for the power sunroof option back in the day - way expensive. American Sunroof Corp came up with a manual sunroof kit for 1973 and up A and B bodies - which got the price down into the $200 to $250 range I believe. As for production numbers - with the lower cost of the manual sunroof - orders went up a bit. I don't have hard numbers for 1973 Chargers, but there were a little more than 400 installed on 1973 Plymouth B bodies. With slightly higher overall production numbers for Chargers that year, I would guess anywhere from 400 to 600 sunroof cars. Your 117 number seems a bit low - do you have a reference for that number? Maybe that was just for SE Chargers?? Thanks, Scott.

In 1989 I wrote Chrysler they gave me a percentage of cars made with a power sunroof, it worked out to 399 SE. I did not ask about other Chargers and it would make sense since the von is line specific. So with that in mind not many could be made after mine. I have had interest by Galen to document my car but after initial contact and interest I can not get a hold of him. I have the letter stored sumplace safe and need to dig it out.
