The first line says alot (the bottom line) I don't have a 72 decoder, but the generic decoder found at www.mopar1.us/build.html#wheels%20hubcps does help! E4 D14 WP29 G2A 120807 E4_ 318 D14 3sp Manual Column Shift W....Charger P.....SE 29...Charger G....318 2bbl A....Assembly plant (not St Louis - sorry my info is limited) So, there you have it: a column shifted 72 318/3sp manual tranny SE. It appears to be pretty stripped down too. Looks like it's new release on life will be as a hotrod. Any second chance is a good start! I gotta wonder though.....Were these all around us & we just didn't notice or were they rare?! My personal fight for preservation goes to numbers matching original slant 6 & 440 cars. Some cars are rare & have gained a tremendous value! Other cars are scarce, even from inception, & nobody cares. Hope that doesn't sound too crude. Gotta follow your heart in these matters! Lookin forward to pics!!!!!!!!!!

If I found a 3 on the tree car I would not mess with it, but that is just my opinion, and everyone can do whatever they want with their cars. That is the fun of working on them. I'm kinda getting off the subject, but I have a 71 slant 6 charger auto with a/c. I just cant find any slant six production for 71. Do you have any ideas?

My '74 is/was a three on the tree car. After getting past the uniqueness of the set up, I had no problem changing it. It was a poor set up. The shift throw from 1st to 2nd gear had 16 plus inches of travel and was sloppy. The problems were not due to wear, as the car was only 5 years old and had less than 30k miles on it when I bought it, it was just a poor design. The 3spd tranny also had too much gear ratio spread for fun driving. It was like driving an old truck. Changing it to a 4spd was a night and day change for the better.
I still have the original set up. I will try to post pics for those interested. The column pieces are still in the car. The hideous linkage is stored some place else.

Welcome aboard crazy...
Very interesting car....different to say the least.
I would hold on to every piece of the setup for the 3 on the tree if you decide to go 4 on the floor....

There is a military issued 71 charger with a 318 and a three-on-the-tree in "Choose Your Item" website. It is listed as "Rare". I have never seen one and I was raised in a Mopar family and I just turned 48 last month. Personally, I would like to own one. And that's my 2 pennies.

Very interesting stuff!!!
As for a 3sp 440: Why not? Before the 833 4sp MoPar used a 3sp in their HP cars!

This thread was getting a little stale, so I figured I'd better add my 2 or 4 or 6 pennies to the jar....... Back in 1990 I test drove a 73 Charger. 318 car, tan with rallye side stripe. I had no idea what a 73 Rallye Charger was back then, just thought it was cool. 3 on the tree. YES, it had a clutch pedal and it was WEIRD to drive. Yep, shoulda bought it, but I didn't. Mid 90's.....I bought a 74 Charger, 318, auto on floor. After further investigation, turned out to have originally been a Slant Six, Three-on-the-tree. I really didn't notice at first because the column shifter wasn't being used. It had been converted to floor shift and I fixed what the previous owner had done wrong. (I changed the 69 B-body parts for more correct 76 B-body parts from a Cordoba). I still have the column around here somewhere. I suppose y'all want pictures, eh? Steve
