EPA Proposes End To R134a Thanks to my friends at the Mobile Air Conditioning Society for passing this along! The EPA published a Notice Of Proposed Rulemaking yesterday, July 9, in part calling for the end of the use of R134a, beginning with the 2021 MY. Here's the excerpt of interest: 2) For motor vehicle air conditioning systems in newly manufactured, light-duty vehicles • HFC-134a as unacceptable starting with model year (MY) 2021; and • The refrigerant blends SP34E, R-426A (also known as RS-24), R-416A (also known as HCFC Blend Beta or FRIGC FR12), R-406A, R-414A (also known as HCFC Blend Xi or GHG-X4), R-414B (also known as HCFC Blend Omicron), HCFC Blend Delta (also known as Free Zone), Freeze 12, GHG-X5, and HCFC Blend Lambda (also known as GHG-HP) as unacceptable starting with MY 2017. This proposed rule was reported on earlier this year, and does not come as a surprise. If put into effect, it only means that new cars and light duty vehicles made for sale in the 2021 MY will need to use something other than R134a. Any vehicle up until that date can still use R134a, and be serviced with R134a. The question is - What will the new cars be filled with??? link
