There are 2 bearings, one by the steering wheel, #8 and the other by the firewall #36

Well the problem is the shaft dont even touch the bearing, there's at least a 1/4 inch of gap all the way around. I purchased the bearing of what was supposed to be right. It looks like it would fit the shaft, but not the housing the old bearing is in. By housing I mean outer casing of bearing thats held on with two bolts. Im not even sure what 30-35 is on diagram.

Couple of possibilitees. 73 columns are a one year animal so you may have a 71-2 shaft and 73 housing. Or possibly the shaft is sticking out too far on the top and you need to pull it down to get the bearing to ride on a bigger part of the shaft. There is a article somewhere about putting in a readily available bearing in the lower column to upgrade the cheap factory setup. My low cost upgrade was to use a lower bearing from a Volare which is the same size but uses a heavy duty bearing with three attachment bolts. You only have to drill another hole.

Thank you! This helps a lot. Let ya know what I find as Im eager to get on the road. When I get this done Im replacing the dash pad and the dreaded wiring it back in and then hopefully get to take a spin. I bought this car when I was 16 and getting ready to turn 37. Finally got her the way I want after years of just not getting to put the money into her like I would have liked. College, marriage, kids, bills, you know how it goes. But Ive always held on to her and it's finally paying off. I truly appreciate all the help. Will post pics when I get a chance.
