I searched but could not find an answer, I purchased a "direct fit" alternator for my 71 charger and when I went to install I notice that in addition to the 3/8" stud and two fields (with spade connector) that there is a small stud as well (located towards edge of one of field connector) my question is what if anything does this need connected to? If a pic is needed let me know. Thanks

Ground reinforcement if you want. You got one of the laters 70s squarebacks alts.
Housings are diff, also one of the brush holders

Nacho Everything else it the same as the one I removed (except the extra post). In your expert opinion (valued as such, since I have been a member here and on dc site) would you just leave it un connected or run a wire as reinforcement? it seems to me the alternator is grounded by default via mounts.

Yes is "grounded" via mounts. In this case the alt chassis works like ground source for the car, is not the car sourcing the ground to the alt. The stud will provide an extra output source, just like the positive source it is.
Interesting if is a roundback with that stud.

Well the alternator looked like the old one but was thicker and I could not get it to fit and be able to adjust. It is going back. I took the original to a local re builder and it looks better then the parts store version, and I know it fits. I picked it up on way home tonight and will install is shortly. Thanks for the helps.

I like rebuilding the originals when possible. Glad it worked out.

As I said, you got a later alt which is really thicker. Maybe couple of mms. Sure looks quite like earliers, but is not completely exact. Needs some masaging. Mill down the rear spacer is a help, but also would need a longer belt to sway the block from rear of the alt on BB cars... being there done that
