Was browsing the website of one of the yards I go to last night. Noticed that they had recently added a Charger to their inventory. Problem was that it was listed as a 1197. Decided I would make the 120 mile drive and check it out first thing Sunday morning. I previously had planned to be junking in Alabama and Tennesee. My idea was that number had all the same digits as 1971.
Got up at 5 AM, brewed a pot of Coffee...... and my son and I were off on another road trip. Wanting to get there right at or before opening time, I had the pedal to the floor. Unfortunately on a 6 cyl Ford pick up, that means 80 mph.
Got there right at 8 AM and headed to the row where it was supposed to be. Uh oh.....nothing here looks like a Charger at all......except that 77 Ram Charger.....
Went ahead and spent $250 there and at another yard near it on non Mopar parts that I resell. Was feeling real disappointed with the trip. Decided to head to a yard back in Atlanta for a quick visit.......zooom...zoom...another 145 miles into Atlanta.
Saw a 76 valiant and unfortunately it did not have disc brakes. Told my son to go ahead and start pulling the nice black seat belts out of it while I took a look at a 77 pick up. The truck was a manual trans...good news...but unfortunately was a 3 speed. I then noticed
the 8 3/4 rear. I went ahead and made the obligatory turn of one rear wheel, expecting the other one to spin in the opposite direction. To my great surprise, the other wheel spun in the same direction as the one I was turning. (sure-grip) Then of course...I crawled under the trunk and looked at the still present gear ratio tag. 3.23 in a 489 case. Yep.....lightning struck twice! I found two sure-grip chunks in a matter of 3 days. I had my son quit the seat belt job and we got it yanked out in 15 minutes, paid for it and headed home to order some pizza and watch the Green Bay/NY Giants game.
