Here's a nice mod that'll make you "green" with envy... I converted a '77 New Yorker tilt/tele column to take a tuff wheel. When you're 6'7" it beats the heck out of smashing your knees on the wheel. (I just noticed in the pictures that it was about 10 seconds in between pictures. Look at the second hand on the clock!)

Nice work! I picked up a column shift version of that at a Chevy swap meet a few years ago for $5. I thought it might come in handy some day.

Great work! I know of several later seventies cars in the local JYs that may have tilt. Is there alot of modification in the install of the column and wheel?

Great work! I know of several later seventies cars in the local JYs that may have tilt. Is there alot of modification in the install of the column and wheel? I popped the shift lever off and ground down the stub, filled it with body filler and painted the column. The wheel, however, was a MAJOR pain in the rectum. I cut the center out of another stock steering wheel to make the tele feature workable, and the adjuster had to be mounted topside to line up with the tuff wheel. This is three different column's worth of parts to make one column.

What is the little lever sticking up behind the hornpad for?
Is this the tele feature? I'm familiar with tilt - but do tell me
about how & what the tele does!

When you move the lever to the left, it loosens a nut inside the column that lets the telescoping feature move. The whole steering wheel moves forward and backward about four inches. If you look at the second and third pictures, check out where the wheel is in relation to the seat. There is a sleeve attached to the steering wheel that slides over the outside of the column, so you don't really see any of the mechanism. All the Mopar tilt columns were 4" across where the standard columns are 4 1/2". That made it difficult to put a good looking wheel on. The standard steering wheel when you had a tilt looked like this... The ones with the telescope feature had the lever on the bottom. With the way the tuff wheel is, I had to reverse the mechanism to make it look somewhat normal.
