For the past few weeks, I've been hearing this ticking sound under the hood. I had assumed it was a lifter at first... but then I've had lifters tick before... and that was usually at low rpm's. This is different.
I start to hear it once the car is going about 55-60 mph. If I had to guess, it sounds like it's coming from the driver side of the engine compartment.
Funny thing is, if I sit there in the driveway and raise the RPM's up to 2500-ish (approximately where it would be while driving 55-60), I don't hear any ticking. It's only while I am driving.
Currently, the car is in a local shop getting it looked at. The man told me he didn't think it was engine related. He thought maybe it was the speedo cable... hmmm... I don't know about that! Seems if the speedo cable was catching enough to make that much noise, you'd see a bounce in the needle with each tick. I think he plans to disconnect the cable from the tranny and see if the noise is still there or not. But, to me, it sounds like its coming from under the driver side rocker cover. As far as I can tell, there's no exhaust leak.
As far as the way the engine runs... it's great! Smooth and hauls like it should.
Any suggestions?

Drive he car up to speed, put it in neutral and coast changing the engine speed to see if the noise stays steady (driveling related) or changes with the engine speed.

I never had them hit the block, but on my Duster, that tin inspection cover would get a little bent up and rub on the flexplate bolts. I had to "adjust" it more than once.
But I don't discount the speedo cable possibility.

I guess my curiosity stems from why would torque converter bolts hitting the block only be audible once you get to a certain speed. Seems you'd hear it at any speed. One thought I had is it might not be a speed or rpm thing... but instead an rpm AND load thing. It wont make the noise in the driveway while in park and bringing the revs up to speed... but will on the highway... so maybe it's showing up when the rpm's get to a certain point while it's under load. So that brings up another idea... what if I drive it and leave it in 2nd gear and get it up to those same rpms to see if it ticks. I'll be going to the shop today to discuss this stuff with the guy. When we spoke the other day, I think he was a little bit perplexed over it. I know this much... the ticking is loud enough that I feel like something is about to let go sooner or later! But then, if I only drive under 55 mph, I have nothing to worry about!

Sure it is not a slight exhaust leak at manifolds. That could sound like a tick.

Nacho: Gotcha!! *thumb up*
KING: As far as an exhaust leak, yes I looked for one but all seems tight over there. I did have to fix an exhaust leak on the other side... the gasket had a blow out. But so far I haven't found any more leaks. Of course, there could still be one there and it only shows it's at that speed. I might still change the gaskets so I can rule that out, but dammit I hate changing stuff only to find that it wasn't the problem.
