I was thinking Masonite too, but couldn't remember the name of it.
I didn't notice the driver's side speaker hole is smaller, but it sure is! Makes it easier to buy speakers, doesn't it? Anyone seen them sold individually?
Most of these speakers are now "wireless phone accessories." So now we don't need head units? It'll be easier to decide whether or not to put in a stereo if I don't have to buy the $600 factory-look head unit that fits into the tiny factory radio slot.
I wasn't going to put a stereo in, will hardly ever use it, but it looks like the package tray has to go in before the sail panels at least if not also the upper side panels, and probably the seat back too.
BTW I see there is also a "jute insulation pad" that goes under the package tray. I can't recall taking one out, but that was a long time ago. It looks like there is not much room, in terms of thickness, between the upper side panels (or is it the sail panels), and the metal tray, where the side panels overlap the package tray and hold it down. If I understand how this works, the package tray and insulation together can't be much more than 1/8-1/4" thick.
I wonder if there is a locally available material that would work as well?

Use a poster board as a template first. The jute-like insulation was very thin, and spray glued to the back of the board if I recall correctly, which may be why you don't remember removing it. A barrier against rattles between the board and body, and a nominal sound insulation, I would think just about any modern insulation would do as a replacement. I know nothing about this vendor....just something that popped up on a google search. JUTE LINK

Anyone seen them sold individually? Never have seen being sold individually, but the one generic parts offered at electronic shops. Since I installed rear deffog on passenger side I only got the driver side being NOS quite ago in around $20... just because was listed for front Mopar trucks, which is the same for B and E bodies. If seller was found it was the same, sure the price was x10. Weird part of this is seller was bradsnosparts LOL I wasn't going to put a stereo in, will hardly ever use it, but it looks like the package tray has to go in before the sail panels at least if not also the upper side panels, and probably the seat back too. Actually I think sail panels must be in before the package tray. Package tray gets in fact a finish treatment on side ends to fit over the sail panel ends, something like a vinyl stitched to it. BTW I see there is also a "jute insulation pad" that goes under the package tray. I can't recall taking one out, but that was a long time ago. If I understand how this works, the package tray and insulation together can't be much more than 1/8-1/4" thick. Original package tray gets also 3 metallic inserts to get the same clips/retainers used on door panels. Sheetmetal have the holes for these vicible on your pics ( round holes on round depresions close to speakers and just right in the middle ). Repros doesn't get these insert provisions. There is room for insulation, don't worry. Not a thick insulation but still there is room.

Will a 6X9 that sits above the package tray fit into the 5X8 hole? It looks like this sits on top of the package tray - Kenwood 6X9's

No, the basket case size won't allow to fit into the 5x8 hole

I suppose two 5X8's could be used instead of a 5X8 and a 6X9, if there's an adapter for that. Is the 6X9 screw pattern same as modern speakers? Has anyone figured out how to mount modern 5X8 to the old 5X8 screw pattern?

6x9 pattern is the same. I just found 5x8 is not, but never tried diff brands. Actually I think is just about open new holes on tray to the newers 5x8s if you get that issue.
Can't tell if there is an adaptor for 5x8 to fit on 6x9. Mostly sure would need to be made by yourself

Yes the tray board sits on top (tried it both ways) and there is a vinyl trim stitched to the ends to finish it off.BTW I see there is also a "jute insulation pad" that goes under the package tray. Shipping the jute wouldn't be a big deal but the large tray is another issue. Cutting from a large piece isn't worth the time and there is plenty of room for it.
Yes there is no place for the clips on the new tray but between the window trim and the back of the seat it's help down fine.
