Looking for opinions if it is worth welding a stiffening plate to a 1974 lower control arm. I would on a 71-72 since they are basically two steel plates riveted together with a small plate welded on top. The 73-74's are one piece that is U shaped, so I'm not sure a stiffening plate would add much strength. Also, would a 74 lca also be dipped in cosmoline or did they stop doing that? Thanks!

I'd reinforce them, if you plan on getting some sticky tires and focusing on the cars handling.

73 and lates LCAs are considerably stronger than earliers, but the stiffening plates won't hurt if you think on a heavy duty use. For a driver OR quite often use I don't think will show any noticeable improvement

I did the stiffening plates on mine as well as stiffening up all the other front suspension parts and I think it was well worth the effort.

What about the color? Were 74's still dipped in cosmoline? When did they stop doing this? I wouldn't use actual cosmoline for a driver, but would like to duplicate it in paint if it's correct for that year. Mine were solid rust with no signs of any treatment.

I got a NOS 74 LCA set quite ago to replace my factory ones and they are in bare steel actually with some surface "dust rust", if we can call it like that! I couldn't see any treatment on them. Mostly sure will paint them black anyway.
But I'd say they could be maybe galvanized to hold fine ?
