Just bought a 1973 charger se with the 400 4barrel. Most everything on the car works well - only problems so far include the non functioning of all the instrument panel lights, horn, etc. What I have figured out is that the devices/lights powered by circuits 1,2,5 on the fuse block do not work. I have replaced all fuses and all have power when checked at the fuse block except for the 5 amp fuse in circuit 5. Seems like this issues should be more simple than I think, and I sure do not want to take out the dash/instrument panel unless I have too. Please help Hard to drive at night without the panel lights Thanks

Doesn't sound like a quick and easy fix. Fuses 1 and 5 are fed independently and fuses 2,3, and 4 fed off the power buss. Kind of indicates multiple issues. If you don't already have one I'd suggest you get hold of a factory service manual. They come in real handy!!

You might want to also buy a new fuse block and double check the grounds under the dash. Had my ground wire accidentaly come lose one night and all my dash lights went out. Just thinking out loud here.

I bought the manual for the 1973 cars. Seems a little tedious without clear instruction on how to fix most things. I will study it again

It may be a number of items causing the problems. One place to check for the dash lights, is the rheostat that is built into the headlight switch. Rotating the knob in one direction will dim/turn off the dash lights. Turning fully the opposite direction, the dash lights will increase in brightness, and then you should feel a detente which is the point at which the interior light will come on

It couldn't hurt to Check the two harnesses that run through the steering column and end under the dash by your right foot side. I once tugged it with my foot after replacing both harnesses and my horn/radio stopped working. I'm not sure what else it affected because I realized and fixed it right away. A friend told me that the connector plugs often corroded. Two plug connectors, one for the horn and the other for the ignition switch. They look like this. My car is a 71.
