Hello Yesterday (despite the bad wheater) i went out to my mechanic and let him fill up the AC System with R134a on my 73 charger. I have converted it the way classic Auto air told me by removing the epr Valve and install a switch with a sensing tube. has anyone done this conversion and can Show me a Picture of how he has installed the tube? i only replaced the dryer,o-rings and condenser, the other parts are from 73.. so i was surprised that the system did not leak and and he was able to charge the system with R134a and a uv leak dye. it turned out that the pressure switch on the dryer is bad.we bypassed it and the compressor kicked in and it blows cold air so he told me to use it for a while and later we check for leaks and replace the switch if i find one. during driving home,i let the ac run and when i opened the hood i noticed that the compressor has a thin ice coat on top but thats probably normal? peter

Still the big, iron, original RV2 compessor?
I've seen lines get frosty, but I don't recall seeing a compressor that way.

Hi dave, yes it is the original rv2 compressor. It only had ice around the inlet area on the compresor , maybe it was because the blower motor had blown its fuse during driving home and did not work. so it run on max ac without fan.

Did you change out the oil in the compressor? Needs to be ester oil. I changed mine over a couple of years ago. Removed the epr valve but other than that it has a standard dryer and pressure switch (new). My line frosts up on humid days.

im not a new member, i only changed the avatar :-) I'm like a kid. I only look at the pictures! And I'd say you are on the right track. If the evaporated (cold) refrigerant doesn't have air movement, it's can't collect heat. That still super cold refrigerant could easily chill the line all the way up to the compressor.

I got couple of times, maybe more, some ice around the rear outlet/inlet and line attached on RV2 compressor. Not a thin coat layer but thick actually. Can't tell why. I made the 134a gas conversion, Rear valve was removed... even adviced I'm not using any temp sensor switch thought.
